Senior Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) scored a game-high five goals, including the game winner just 33 seconds into overtime, to lift the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team to Wednesday evening's 13-12 overtime victory at Larkin Field.
Joyce added three assists for a game-best eight points, while junior Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) notched four points on three goals and an assist.
Southern New Hampshire, which finished just 4-for-26 on the faceoff, captured the most important one of the game to start the extra session and then called timeout 16 seconds in. Joyce let a shot fly just seven seconds out of the timeout that went wide, but the Penmen maintained possession. Then, from the left side of the cage, Joyce ripped a shot that beat Bentley goalkeeper Daniel Shaughnessy and tucked into the back of the net to lift SNHU to victory with 3:27 on the clock.
Bentley forced overtime by outscoring Southern New Hampshire, 6-1, in the fourth quarter.
Joyce kicked off the scoring just 2:04 into the contest with a goal off a feed from Heckman. The teams then alternated goals, with Bentley knotting the game with 6:43 to go in the opening quarter. Joyce potted his second of the game just 20 seconds later off a pass from junior Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) to snap the deadlock and sophomore Corey Cairo (Wading River, N.Y.) found the back of the net with 11 seconds on the clock as Southern New Hampshire brought a 4-2 edge into the second stanza.
The Penmen maintained momentum to begin the frame as Joyce set up sophomore Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.) to make it a three-goal game just 1:36 in. Bentley halted the run 1:50 later, but a Heckman goal at the 3:15 mark and a tally from sophomore Devin Calkins (Bow, N.H.) under two minutes later sent the Penmen to the break with a 7-3 advantage.
Joyce scored consecutive goals to begin the second-half scoring and hand the Penmen a game-high six-goal lead at 9-3 with 10:06 remaining in the third quarter. Bentley answered by potting three of the next four goals, but Joyce set up Heckman's third of the day to make it 11-6 after three.
Bentley struck just 17 seconds into the final frame, but Trainor found the back of the net less than two minutes later off a Joyce pass to keep it a five-goal game. The Falcons then took off, however, scoring five consecutive goals, including Alex Astarita's with seven ticks on the clock to knot the game at 12-all and send it to overtime.
