Scores: Game One: LIU Post 2, No. 25 Southern New Hampshire University 0 | Game Two: LIU Post 6, No. 25 Southern New Hampshire University 4
Records: SNHU 16-9, LIU Post 22-7-1
Sophomore Katie Horiuchi (Livingston, N.J.) connected on her first career home run and senior Mo Hannan (Scarbrough, Maine) collected three hits, but No. 25 Southern New Hampshire University was swept by LIU Post in a non-conference softball doubleheader at the LIU Post Softball Complex on Sunday. The Penmen fell in game one, 2-0, before suffering a 6-4 setback in the finale.
Horiuchi finished with a pair of hits, two RBI and a run scored, while Hannan turned in a 3-for-7 performance and scored twice.
The opener was a pitcher's duel between sophomore Stephanie Martin (Milford, Mass.) and the Pioneers' Ashley Martin, as neither side was able to generate any offense until the sixth inning. Leah Mele and Samantha Marrone led off the bottom of the frame with back-to-back singles for LIU Post before an RBI fielder's choice by Maria Palmeri two batters later plated the first run of the day. Paige Swantek followed with a base hit to plate Marrone, and cap the game's scoring.
Stephanie Martin suffered her first setback of the season in the circle for Southern New Hampshire after scattering eight hits and surrendering just two runs. Ashley Martin improved to 10-4 on the year after allowing four hits and striking out five in a complete game shutout.
After failing to push across a run in the first game, the Penmen grabbed an early lead in game two with a run in the top of the first. Hannan started the contest with a double to left and sophomore Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) reached on an infield single to put two on with nobody out. Senior Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) stepped in next and cracked a run-scoring single to left drive in Hannan to make it 1-0.
LIU Post responded in the home half of the second when Ashley Melendez sent a three-run shot over the wall in center to put the hosts on top by a pair before Southern New Hampshire trimmed the deficit to a single run in the top of the third. Hannan singled to start the frame and after moving up to second on a sacrifice bunt, senior Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) drove her in with a base knock to left center.
The Pioneers extended their advantage to four with a two-out, three-run rally in the fourth. Leah Mele delivered a two-run single and came around to score two batters later on a base hit by Julia Seader.
The score remained unchanged until the top of the seventh when the Penmen attempted to mount a late comeback. After sophomore Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) singled with one away, Horiuchi drilled a two-run homer to left to cut the disadvantage to 6-4. It would be as close as Southern New Hampshire would get, however, as Hannah Olshevski retired the ensuing two hitters in order to close out the game.
Olshevski upped her record to 12-3 with a complete-game effort that saw her spread seven hits and strikeout two. Junior Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) was saddled with the loss for SNHU after going 3.1 innings and allowing five runs on six hits. Martin tossed 2.2 innings of relief and gave up one run on four hits.
Notes:
- Hannan, Perdigao, Caruso and Horiuchi were the only Penmen to pick up a hit in both contests.
- In her last four appearances, Martin has thrown 13.1 innings and given up just three earned runs during that stretch.
