Score: Southern New Hampshire University 2, Saint Michael's College 0
Records: SNHU 23-11 (15-5 Northeast-10), SMC 3-30 (2-20 Northeast-10)
Sophomore Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) fired a five-hit shutout and fanned six, while junior Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a home run to help guide the Southern New Hampshire University softball team to a 2-0 win over Saint Michael's College at the SNHU Softball Field on Wednesday.
The Penmen, who were the visiting team due to a site change, jumped on the board first with a run in their first trip to the plate. Senior Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) was hit by a pitch before freshman Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) singled into center to put runners on first and third with one out. Senior Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) plated Bolduc with a sacrifice fly down the line in left to give Lavallee all the offense she would need.
Saint Michael's threatened to knot the score and potentially take the lead in the home half of the fourth. After Caroline Staples connected on a one-out base hit, a Danielle DelGreco double left runners on second and third. Lavallee was able to bear down, however, as she got the next batter on a groundout before retiring the side with a punch out.
Torsiello provided an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as she launched a towering solo shot out to left to make it 2-0, and cap the game's scoring.
Garczynski and Caruso each finished 1-for-2, while senior Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) also collected a hit in the victory.
Purple Knights' starter Danielle Brown went the distance in the setback, and allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out eight Penmen hitters.
Notes:
- Lavallee upped her record to 14-4 on the season and tossed her eighth shutout of the year in the process. Her 1.50 ERA is tied for tops in the NE-10 and her 14 wins are the second-most.
- Hannan extended her hitting streak to seven games, and has now reached base safely in 17 of her last 18 outings.
