Senior Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) and junior Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) each scored four goals and handed out a pair of assists to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 17-7 victory over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action at Duffy Field on Wednesday.
Joyce and Trainor tallied a game-high six points, while junior Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) added four goals and an assist, and classmate Cameron McGuire (Melrose, Mass.) chipped in with two scores.
The Penmen wasted little time in getting on the board, as Joyce setup Trainor with the game's first goal just 1:10 into the contest. Joyce doubled the lead at 3:13 before a man-up marker by sophomore Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.) made it 3-0 with less than five minutes gone bye in the first.
After the Purple Knights halted the run midway through the quarter, Southern New Hampshire responded with four goals in the span of 2:30 to take a commanding 7-1 lead into the second. Trainor potted his second of the afternoon with 6:52 left in the stanza, and Heckman netted his 18th of the season 13 seconds later. McGuire took a feed from senior Eric Johnson (West Suffield, Conn.) and deposited it past Saint Michael's goalkeeper T.J. Bicknell (8 saves) at 9:23 before Heckman added his second of the quarter from junior Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) with 4:22 to go.
Mark Yetter brought the hosts back within five to start the second stanza, but back-to-back goals by Heckman and McGuire extended the Penmen advantage to 9-2 at 4:46. The Purple Knights answered with two consecutive scores, but a Trainor tally followed by two straight from Joyce ballooned the Southern New Hampshire lead to 12-4 heading into the half.
Saint Michael's sandwiched a pair of goals around Heckman's fourth of the day to make it 13-6 with 10:10 into the third before sophomore Khyan Gaddy (Albany, N.Y.) took a pass from Joyce and collected his first of the year with 1:04 to go in the quarter.
The final 15 minutes of play belonged to the visitors, as the Penmen outscored the Purple Knights by a 3-1 margin in the fourth. A man-up strike by Joyce at 4:13 was followed by sophomore Devin Calkins' (Bow, N.H.) sixth of the season with 1:31 left in regulation. Trainor capped the scoring with his 14th of the year with under a minute to play to provide Southern New Hampshire with the 17-7 triumph.
Junior Tyler Walsh (Northampton, Mass.) improved to 3-0 in the Penmen cage after stopping 13 shots and raking in a game-high seven groundballs.
