Sophomores Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) captured a No. 1 doubles match and freshman Max Georgeff (Toronto, Ontario) won his singles tilt in the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team's 7-2 loss to the Atlantic Coast Conference's Boston College on Thursday afternoon at the Flynn Recreation Complex.
The Penmen jumped out to an early lead against the Division I Eagles as the Marreiros' edged out Kyle Childree and Hank Workman, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles. BC would lose just one set in the final two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Ricardo Marreiros fell to Aidan McNulty at No. 1 singles as he dropped the first set, 6-2, before solving the lefty's big serve, but falling just short in the second set, 7-5. Brother Miguel defeated Jeffrey Melvin, 6-2 in the first set at No. 2 singles before suffering an injury. He was able to stay in the match, but fell in the final two sets, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, sophomore Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) earned a 6-4 first-set victory against Kent Mukai and then lost the last two sets, 6-0, 6-1. Fellow sophomore Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) also hung tough against Kyle Childree at No. 4 singles, but dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision.
Georgeff's big victory came at No. 6 singles as he held off Max MacKinnon, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
Notes:
-The loss snaps the first four-game winning streak in more than two years for the Penmen.
-Southern New Hampshire is 10th in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II East Rankings.
-Ricardo Marreiros, Miguel Marreiros and Aubron are all ranked inside the top 20 among singles players in the region at 10th, 12th and 15th, respectively. Ricardo Marreiros and Aubron are the eighth-ranked doubles team in the region.
