Sophomore Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) captured a pair of matches, including the championship clincher at No. 4 singles, as the top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team earned its second Northeast-10 Championship with a 5-2 triumph against third-seeded Adelphi University on Sunday afternoon at the Executive Health & Sports Center.
In addition to being the second title in program history for the Penmen, it is also the second in the last three years as they nabbed the first NE-10 Championship in 2014.
With SNHU ahead, 4-2, Fernandes closed out Sebastian Zapata, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles to set off an on-court celebration as the Penmen clinched the championship.
Southern New Hampshire led, 2-1, after doubles as Fernandes and classmate Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) doubled up their opponents, 8-4, in the No. 1 slot, while fellow sophomores Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Aubron handed SNHU a 3-1 advantage with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Sander Brenner at No. 3 singles before Matteo Cannavera pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles against Ricardo Marreiros to trim the Adelphi deficit to 3-2.
After Miguel Marreiros outlasted Uladzislau Litvinchuk, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, Fernandes sealed the victory at No. 4.
Sophomore Sebastian Ramirez (Merida, Valenzuela) was narrowly ahead, 6-2, 2-5, against Roey Heymann at No. 5 singles at the time of the clinching win, while fellow sophomore Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) trailed Daniel Khodosh, 3-1, at No. 6.
Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire is now 2-2 all-time in Northeast-10 Championship title matches.
-Aubron was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Northeast-10 Championship, while he was joined on the All-Championship Team by Fernandes and Miguel Marreiros.
-SNHU has won 12 of its last 13, including 12 straight against Division II opponents.
-Fernandes has captured 12 straight singles matches against Division II foes.
-Southern New Hampshire sits fifth the latest Oracle/ITA Division II East Rankings, while Adelphi is seventh.
-Ricardo Marreiros is ranked seventh among singles players in the region, while he and Aubron are the 10th-ranked doubles team in the East.
