BOX SCORE

When and Where: May 11, 2016 – Garden City, N.Y. (Janet L. Ficke Softball Field)
Score: Adelphi University 1, Southern New Hampshire University 0
Records: SNHU 29-14, Adelphi 33-20

Sophomore Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) fanned five, scattered seven hits and allowed one run in a complete-game effort, but Adelphi University's Lindsay Mapes surrendered just one hit in a seven-inning shutout to lead the Panthers past Southern New Hampshire University, 1-0, in the opening game of the 2016 NCAA Division II East Super Regional.

The lone run of the afternoon came on a two-out single off the bat of Nicoletta Cuccio. After Christina Palmenteri reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, Cuccio dropped a base hit into right center two batters later that allowed Palmenteri to scamper in.

Neither side was able to generate much offense through the first four innings of play. The Penmen posed the first threat of the game in the top of the first when they were able to put a pair of runners in scoring position with two away. Freshman Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) reached on an error before senior Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) picked up Southern New Hampshire's only hit of the afternoon on a single to right. After Mapes uncorked a wild pitch to advance the runners to second and third, she induced a pop out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless. Adelphi nearly took the lead in the bottom of the frame, as Nicole Camera sent a bounding ball down the first base line with a runner on third and two outs. Junior Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) smothered the ball and fired a strike to the plate that cut down Cuccio and maintained the 0-0 tie.

The Panthers were only able to advance one runner to second base prior to the fifth, when they used a single and a walk to put two on with one out in the third. Lavallee prevented any damage, however, as she froze the next two hitters for back-to-back strikeouts to retire the side.

Caruso finished 1-for-3 at the plate for Southern New Hampshire, while junior Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) drew a walk. Cuccio was 2-for-2 with a walk for Adelphi and five Panthers picked up single hits.

Notes:
- The one hit outing was the Penmen's lowest hit total in a game since May 9, 2015. Southern New Hampshire was held to a single hit in its second game of the 2015 NCAA East 1 Regional, a 1-0 defeat against LIU Post. The Penmen followed that performance by winning three consecutive contests, including two against the Pioneers, to advance to the Super Regional.
- Despite allowing the one hit, Mapes did not strikeout a single Southern New Hampshire hitter and needed 101 pitches in the complete game.

What's Next:
