Men's Golf Places Second at NCAA Regional; Advances to Nationals for First Time

RESULTS

When and Where: May 4, 2016 – Baldwinsville, N.Y. (Timber Banks Golf Club – Par 72)
Score: Southern New Hampshire University (903) 2nd/20

Freshman Gavin Dugas (Pittsfield, Maine) penned an even-par 72 onto his final round scorecard Wednesday to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's golf team to a second-place finish at the NCAA East/Atlantic Regional, hosted by Le Moyne College at Timber Banks Golf Club.

The Penmen, as one of the top five scoring teams in the Regional, becomes one of 20 teams in the country to advance to the NCAA National Championships, hosted by Metropolitan State University of Denver at the Green Valley Ranch in Denver, Colo, on May 17-21. SNHU, which punches a ticket to the National Championships for the first time in program history, totaled a 903 to finish six strokes back of Saint Thomas Aquinas College in the top spot and ahead of Concordia (N.Y.) College (904), Wilmington (Del.) University (905) and Le Moyne (909).

Dugas' 72 was his second best round of the tournament and tied for the third best round of the day. Dugas finished 8-over for the Regional with a 224, which tied for the second best score on the team and tied him for 10th overall.

Freshman Matt Paradis (Hooksett, N.H.) matched his best score of the tournament with a one-over 73 that gave him a three-day total of 220, putting him four-over and in fourth place overall to lead the Penmen.

Sophomore Joshua LaCasse (Bow, N.H.) and senior Jake Nutter (Bedford, N.H.), both battling illness, grinded it out to card a 79 and 81, respectively – just enough to help the Penmen finish second. LaCasse's 19-over 235 placed him in a tie for 59th overall, while Nutter gutted it out through his worst round of the tournament and wound up with a score of 8-over 224 to tie for 10th.

Notes:
- The 285 by the Penmen in Tuesday's second round stands as the best team round of the tournament and was the only sub-par score of the 60 total rounds played by the 20 participating teams over the three-day period.
- Junior John Clancy (Sandwich, Mass.) notched his best score of the Regional with an 88 in the final round to finish at 287.
- All five advancing teams from the East/Atlantic Regional, and seven of the top 10, were from the East Region.
- The NCAA East/Atlantic Regional was comprised of 108 student-athletes from 28 different institutions.

What's Next:
The Penmen will tee off at the NCAA National Championships in Denver, Colo., on May 17-21.
