The Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team ran into a buzz saw Thursday night as the fifth-ranked and undefeated University of Nebraska Kearney left the SNHU Fieldhouse with a 3-0 victory (25-7, 25-3, 25-15).
SNHU crept within 6-3 early in the first set when Nebraska-Kearney ripped off a 19-4 run to go up 1-0 in the match.
The Lopers jumped out to a 9-2 lead in set No. 2 before a kill from senior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) stopped the bleeding. UNK reeled of 16 consecutive points from there, however, to grab a commanding 2-0 lead.
The Penmen fell behind, 12-3, in the third set before a pair of service aces from sophomore Shaira Sanabria (Tampa, Fla.) powered a 4-0 spurt that sliced the deficit to five. A 4-1 rush later in the set gave the Lopers a 20-11 advantage and they would cruise to the win.
Salamun collected a team-best five kills, while junior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) added four kills and three digs. Freshman Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) dished 13 assists, with classmate Jessie Leclerc (Englewood, Fla.) tallying nine digs.
