Junior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) and freshman Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) combined for 37 kills on the day, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses at the Raider Classic on Friday at Shippensburg University's Heiges Fieldhouse. The Penmen opened the season with a 3-0 loss (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) to the host Raiders before falling to Seton Hill University, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-15).
The Penmen jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set against Shippensburg on a pair of Coronis kills, but the Raiders would storm back and take control for good at 5-4. The hosts would lead by as many as six in the first set before SNHU cut the deficit in half, but would get no closer.
Coronis again helped Southern New Hampshire out to an early lead in the second set, which would go back-and-forth, with the Penmen clinging to a 17-16 edge late. Shippensburg would close the set on a 9-2 run, however, to take control of the match.
The Raiders would build a commanding 12-3 advantage in the third set and never look back, as SNHU would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
Maguire registered nine kills on .250 hitting in her collegiate debut, while Coronis chimed in with seven kills and 12 digs. Junior Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) totaled a team-high 16 digs, while freshman Jessie Leclerc (Englewood, Fla.) added an even 10. Freshman Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) tallied 22 assists and five digs.
In the first set against Seton Hill, the score was tied at 23-all when the Penmen tallied the next two points, including a kill from senior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) that gave Southern New Hampshire a 1-0 lead in the match.
SNHU held an early 6-4 lead in set No. 2 before five straight points put the Griffins on top for good at 9-6. The Penmen never climbed closer than two as Seton Hill evened the match.
Seton Hill led just once in the third set before rattling off an 8-3 run that turned a four-point deficit into a 23-22 advantage. Kills from Coronis and senior Victoria Wehrmann (Dallas, Texas) knotted the match at 23 and 24, respectively, but the Griffins earned the final two points of the set to turn the tide.
The Penmen collected the first point of the fourth set, but never led again as Seton Hill went up by as many as nine in the stanza before cruising to victory.
Coronis racked up 13 kills and five digs, while Wehrmann was also in double figures with 10 kills. Salamun added nine kills, four digs and three blocks, with Maguire flirting with a double-double as she posted eight kills and 10 digs, to go along with a pair of service aces and two blocks. Coffey tallied up 42 assists and eight digs. Schurman recorded 21 digs, while Leclerc collected 10.
