Junior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) and sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team fell to 25th-ranked Adelphi University, 63-46, Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Stinson shot 5-for-9 from the field, including 1-4 from downtown, and 2-for-2 from the stripe, while grabbing four rebounds. Lorenzen was 3 of 8 from the floor and 6 of 7 from the line to go along with seven boards.
Sierra Clark led the Panthers with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Sierra Schrader also submitted a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards.
Five points from Clark staked Adelphi to an early 8-4 advantage before a layup from sophomore Aaliyah Paxton (Hainesport, N.J.) and a big 3-pointer from Stinson gave Southern New Hampshire a 9-8 edge with 4:14 remaining in the opening stanza.
That would be the final lead of the game for the Penmen as four points from Clark powered a 6-0 run that put Adelphi on top, 14-9, with 2:10 to play. The Panthers would bring a 16-13 advantage into the second quarter.
Baskets from Clark bookended an 11-2 rush that spanned the entire second stanza and expanded the Adelphi lead to 27-15 at the break. Simone Hobdy netted five points during the frame.
After a Calli Balfour free throw began the second-half scoring and nudged the Adelphi lead to 13, an 8-2 blitz from SNHU – with four points each from Stinson and junior Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) – trimmed the deficit to just seven at 30-23 over two minutes in.
The teams then swapped 5-0 runs before Adelphi ripped off a 9-2 run to seize a 44-30 lead with under a minute to play in the quarter. The Panthers would carry a 44-32 advantage into the final frame.
Adelphi would open the fourth with a 6-2 run to grab a 51-34 lead just under two minutes in and would later use an 8-1 flurry to open its largest lead of the day at 61-38 with 3:14 remaining. The Penmen would score eight of the game's final 10 points to close it out.
Conrad posted eight points (4-8 FG) and two rebounds, while junior Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) chipped in five points (1-4 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds and two assists.
Notes:
-Adelphi outshot Southern New Hampshire, 37.5 percent (27-72) to 29.1 percent (16-55), including 38.9 percent (7-18) to 13.3 percent (2-15) from beyond the arc.
-SNHU was plus-10 from the line, as it outshot Adelphi, 75 percent (12-16) to 33.3 percent (2-6). -The Panthers dominated the glass, 50-36, including 16-6 on the offensive end, won the paint (34-24) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (13/14-9/13).
-Adelphi had three players with 10-plus rebounds and a fourth with nine.
