Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) scored a team-high 10 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team was beaten by Southern Connecticut State University, 58-50, Wednesday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Lorenzen was 3-for-4 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, while grabbing three rebounds, in just 21 minutes due to foul trouble.
Taylor McLaughlin led the Owls with 19 points and nine boards.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 12-4 lead over the opening 7:45 on six points from junior Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) before four straight points from Murphy Murad closed the first quarter with SNHU leading, 12-8.
Southern Connecticut began the second stanza with a 16-3 swing – powered by six points each from Paige Decker and Amanda Pfohl – to open up a 24-15 advantage with just over three minutes to play before the half. SCSU would head into the locker room with a 26-17 lead.
The gap was eight nearly three minutes into the second half when a baseline jumper and corner 3-pointer from freshman Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) triggered a 13-3 rush that was led by six points from Lorenzen to give the Penmen a 35-33 edge with just under four minutes to go. Three lead changes and a tie followed before a Pfohl triple put Southern Connecticut in front for good at 42-39 with 49 seconds left. The Owls carried a 44-41 lead into the final frame.
After neither team scored for the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter, a Chandler Williams trey and McLaughlin bucket stretched the Southern Connecticut advantage to 49-41 with 5:53 to go. The Penmen would climb to within three at 53-50 with 2:40 on the clock, but a 5-for-8 performance at the line from the Owls down the stretch was enough to seal it.
