Junior Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 66-53 non-conference victory against Concordia (N.Y.) College on Wednesday evening at the Meyer Athletic Center.
Lorenzen was 5 of 14 from the floor and 8 of 10 from the stripe, while grabbing seven rebounds and making four steals. Senior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) added 12 points (4-13 FG, 4-5 FT) and four boards.
Hadiyah Black paced the Clippers with 16 points, while Julianne Nicholson netted 13.
With the score tied, 6-6, just over four minutes into the contest, a 3-pointer from sophomore Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) and a three-point play by Lorenzen opened up a 12-6 advantage for Southern New Hampshire with four minutes to play. Concordia would end the quarter on a 6-2 run that would trim its deficit to 14-12.
With the game tied at 18-all, a pair of free throws from Lorenzen with 5:14 to play in the second quarter gave the Penmen the lead for good and set off a 12-2 barrage that sent SNHU to the locker room with a 30-20 lead. Lorenzen scored six points during the stretch.
Southern New Hampshire maintained momentum in the second half, opening with an 11-4 blitz that saw Stinson score the first four points and sophomore Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) contribute the final six with a pair of 3-pointers to balloon the lead to 41-24 with 6:17 to go in the third.
The Penmen would lead by 18 when a three-point play from Wilkinson sparked a 7-0 run that trimmed the gap to 11 for Concordia, before a pair of Stinson free throws made it 48-35 heading into the final frame.
SNHU opened its largest lead of the game at 56-36 less than three minutes into the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run. An 11-3 counter-run would pull the Clippers within 12 a 59-47 with 2:30 on the clock, but the Penmen would score seven of the next 10 points – with five coming from senior Mimi MacLeod (Hampton Falls, N.H.) – to widen the gap to 16 at 66-50 with under a minute to go.
MacLeod scored a season-best nine points (3-3 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 2-2 FT) and corralled three rebounds, while Terry recorded eight points (3-6 FG, 2-4 3-FG), two boards and a pair of steals. Junior Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) chimed in with six points (2-8 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 1-2 FT), two rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior Aaliyah Paxton (Hainesport, N.J.) posted four points (1-4 FG, 2-2 FT) and four rebounds.
Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire has won seven of its last nine games.
-Lorenzen moves into a 19th-place tie on SNHU's all-time scoring list and is just 36 points shy of becoming the program's 17th 1,000-point scorer.
-Concordia narrowly outshot SNHU, 34.3 percent (23-67) to 32.3 percent (21-65), while the Penmen were better from beyond the arc, 29.4 percent (5-17) to 9.5 percent (2-21).
-Southern New Hampshire also feasted at the line, holding a plus-14 advantage, while owning an 82.6 percent (19-23) to 71.4 percent (5-7) shooting margin.
-The Penmen turned in a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (6/13-8/24) and held an 18-13 advantage in points off mistakes. The Clippers owned the glass (53-39), paint (34-28) and a 19-7 gap in second chance points.
