Senior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) drilled the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds on the clock to send the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 56-53 victory against Assumption College on Wednesday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) led the way with 18 points (7-13 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 3-4 FT), seven rebounds and two assists, with freshman Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) also scoring in double figures for the Penmen with 10 points (3-8 FG, 2-5 3-FG, 2-2 FT).

Allison Stoddard led all scorers with 21 points for the Greyhounds, while Jo Impellizeri fell just shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine boards.

Tied at 53, Southern New Hampshire forced an Assumption miss and Ryan grabbed the rebound, with the Penmen calling timeout with 17.4 seconds remaining. After inbounding the ball, SNHU again called timeout with 10.0 seconds left, with Assumption following suit before Southern New Hampshire could inbound the ball.

Once play resumed, Assumption fouled three straight times as it had four fouls to give. When the Penmen inbounded the ball for the fourth time, Dean was able to drive baseline by her defender and find Ryan in the opposite corner with the seconds ticking down. Ryan hoisted up a contested 3 that splashed through the net with one-tenth of a second on the clock to give the Penmen the victory.

Ryan finished with nine points (4-8 FG, 1-3 3-FG).

After Assumption jumped out to a 9-3 lead on seven points from Stoddard over the opening 3:11 of the contest, Southern New Hampshire hit back with a 12-0 counter-burst – with four points each from Dean and junior Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) – to seize a 15-9 advantage with 1:20 to go. The Penmen held the Greyhounds scoreless for 6:16 before Jaclyn Storey knocked down a jumper to cut Assumption's deficit to 15-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The SNHU lead was three nearly three minutes in when baskets from Jordan Hawkins and Stoddard leapfrogged Assumption in front, 18-17, with 2:58 to play before the break. Layups from freshman Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Lorenzen expanded the Penmen lead back to three at 21-18 with 1:24 on the clock, but Stoddard would drill a jumper at the buzzer to pull the 'Hounds within 23-22 at halftime.

The Greyhounds trimmed their deficit to just one at 27-26 more than two minutes into the second half when a 7-2 spurt – capped by a Dean triple – gave the Penmen their largest lead of the second half at 34-28 with 6:02 left in the third. Five straight points from Impellizeri again cut the lead to one, but a huge 3 from sophomore Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) halted the run. Assumption, however, would score the final four points of the stanza to knot the contest at 37 heading to the final frame

Baskets from Ryan and Lorenzen to start the fourth staked SNHU to a four-point lead, but Assumption answered with six straight to take a 43-41 advantage with 5:24 remaining. Five lead changes and four ties followed to set up Ryan's heroics.

Camara tallied seven points (3-4 FG, 1-2 3-FG), three rebounds and two assists, with Shelp adding six points (3-5 FG) and five rebounds. Junior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) posted two points (2-2 FT), eight rebounds and three helpers.

Notes:
-SNHU wins back-to-back games for the first time since Dec. 18-30.
-Ryan's shot marked the first time the Penmen won on their final possession since Feb. 17, 2016 when Shelp's bucket with 4.1 seconds gave SNHU a 56-55 win against Franklin Pierce University at the Fieldhouse. It is Southern New Hampshire's first win on the final shot of a game since Stinson hit a 3-pointer as time expired to claim a 65-64 double-overtime win against Franklin Pierce at home on Feb. 10, 2015.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot Assumption, 42.3 percent (22-52) to 35.1 percent (20-57), including 33.3 percent (5-15) to 8.3 percent (1-12) from beyond the arc.
-SNHU, despite being minus-5 from the line, narrowly shot it better, 63.6 percent (7-11) to 63.2 percent (12-19).
-The Greyhounds outrebounded SNHU, 39-34, including 11-4 on the offensive end for an 11-0 advantage in second chance points, won the paint (30-28) and owned a 20-8 margin in points off mistakes, despite the Penmen submitting a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (11/16-5/14).

Up Next:
The Penmen return to action Saturday, Feb. 4 (1:30 p.m.) when they take on Saint Michael's College. The next home game for SNHU is Saturday, Feb. 11 (2 p.m.) when it plays host to Merrimack College on Pink Day at the SNHU Fieldhouse in a game that will air live on NESNplus and NESN National.
