Sophomore Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) registered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team saw its season draw to a close Tuesday with a 69-60 loss to Saint Anselm College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Lorenzen shot 6 of 19 from the floor and 3 of 6 from the line, while making four steals and dishing a pair of assists.
Caitlyn Abela led all scorers with 21 points for the Hawks, while Kaila Duarte posted 18 points and 14 boards.
Saint Anselm scored the first four points of the contest and held leads of 7-2 and 9-4 before opening up a 13-6 advantage near the midway point of the opening stanza. Four straight points from Southern New Hampshire trimmed its deficit to three at the 4:19 mark, but Saint Anselm scored the final six points of the quarter to stretch the lead to 19-10 after one.
SNHU was able to whittle the gap to eight less than two minutes into the second, but back-to-back layups from Duarte gave Saint Anselm a 26-14 lead with 7:24 to play. Senior Madi Rowan (Aliquippa, Pa.) followed with five straight points and all seven during a 7-3 run that cut the lead to single digits at 29-21 with 3:15 remaining. A 5-0 spurt followed to give the Hawks their largest lead of the half at 34-21 with just over a minute on the clock. Saint Anselm would bring a 36-25 advantage to the locker room.
The margin was an even 10 two minutes into the second half when an 11-4 run – with five points from Abela and four from Duarte – opened a 49-32 lead with 5:35 left in the third. Junior Mimi MacLeod (Hampton Falls, N.H.) scored the final six points of the half to trim Southern New Hampshire's deficit to 51-40 heading into the final frame.
A 7-2 spurt – highlighted by an Abela trey – gave Saint Anselm its largest lead of the night at 64-46 midway through the fourth quarter before a 14-3 rush – with six points from freshman Molly Terry (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and two each from four others – slashed the Penmen deficit to 67-60 with 23 seconds on the clock. Abela would knock down a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to cap the scoring.
MacLeod notched eight points (3-6 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 1-1 FT) and five rebounds, while fellow junior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) also scored eight points (4-5 FG) to go along with six rebounds and a pair of steals. Rowan chimed in with seven points (2-2 FG, 3-3 FT). Terry finished with six points (2-7 FG, 2-6 3-FG) and two assists, with junior Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) netting six points (3-7 FG) and collecting two rebounds. Senior Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) tallied four points (2-6 FG), three rebounds, three blocks, three steals and two assists.
Notes:
-Saint Anselm outshot Southern New Hampshire, 41.2 percent (28-68) to 39.7 percent (25-63), including 40 percent (6-15) to 23.1 percent (3-13) from beyond the arc.
-Free throws were even, while Saint Anselm shot it slightly better, 77.8 percent (7-9) to 70 percent (7-10).
-The Hawks won the glass (44-37) and the paint (38-32), while also featuring a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (22/17-9/17).
-This marked the final game in the careers of Rowan and Ryan.
