When and Where: March 10, 2017 – Clermont, Fla. (Legends Way Complex)
Scores: Game One: No. 25 Southern New Hampshire University 2, No. 18 Caldwell University | Game Two: University of Minnesota Duluth 5, No. 25 Southern New Hampshire University 0
Records: SNHU 6-2, Caldwell 1-2, UMD 11-7

Junior Katie Horiuchi (Livingston, N.J.) drove in a pair of runs and freshman Maddy Barone (Halifax, Mass.) fired a complete-game shutout to help No. 25 Southern New Hampshire University split its first two games of the PFX Softball Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Friday. The Penmen opened the day with a 2-0 blanking of No. 18 Caldwell University before dropping the nightcap, 5-0, to the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Barone allowed just three hits and fanned one in the opener, and needed only 76 pitches to shut down the nationally-ranked Cougars. Junior Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) finished game one 2-for-4 and Horiuchi reached base twice with a base hit and a walk.

Both Barone and her counterpart, Sydney Ponto, kept the game scoreless through four innings before Southern New Hampshire generated all the offense it would need. Senior Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) led off the top of the fifth with a single before classmate Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After freshman Hannah Neverett (Nashua, N.H.) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, Perdigao reached to load the bases with one away. Horiuchi stepped in next and tagged a base hit that brought in Morrissey and Torsiello to make it 2-0.

Barone took control from there, as she retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced to close the game.

The only trouble Barone ran into came during the home half of the second, when Caldwell put a runner in scoring position with less than two outs. Carly Testa led off with a base knock before moving up to second on a sacrifice bunt. A groundout to the right side of the infield pushed Testa to third with two away, but Barone induced a line out to left that extinguished the threat. After the second, the Cougars were unable to advance either of its two baserunners past first.

Game two was all Bulldogs, as they held the Penmen offense to just one hit and used a two-run second and a three-run seventh to secure the 5-0 win. Sophomore Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) collected the lone Southern New Hampshire hit of Friday's finale, and senior Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) suffered the setback after allowing just two earned runs and striking out four in seven innings of work.

Minnesota Duluth opened the scoring in the top of the second when Sammie Sadler doubled home Lauren Oberle, who led off the frame with a single, to make it 1-0. After Sadler moved up to third on a groundout to second, she came in to score on a bunt single off the bat of Hannah Bloch.

The score remained unchanged until the top half of the seventh when the Bulldogs staged a two-out rally to tack on three additional insurance runs. Jayme Langbehn reached on an error with two away before Hannah Schmoll followed with a base hit. After Natalie Wright singled to load the bases, Becky Smith connected on a three-run double to make it 5-0, and provide the final margin of scoring.

Sam Hartmann earned the victory in the circle for Minnesota Duluth after surrendering just the one hit and fanning seven in the complete-game effort.

Notes:
- In three starts this season, Barone has allowed just three runs while striking out 18 and walking three in 22 innings of work. She is 3-0 in those games and has a 0.95 ERA and pair of shutouts.
- The Penmen entered Friday's action in the midst of a four-game winning streak after taking the final four games of their Myrtle Beach trip. Despite being idle for 19 days, SNHU extended its streak to five with the victory over Caldwell before falling to Minnesota Duluth.
- After being shutout three times in 37 regular season games last season, Southern New Hampshire has been blanked twice in its first eight outings of the 2017 campaign. The Penmen are 6-0 when scoring at least one run this season, and unbeaten when they are leading or tied after six innings of play.
