HIGHLIGHTS

When and Where: March 17, 2017 – Manchester, N.H. (Larkin Field)
Score: #7 Adelphi University 9, Southern New Hampshire University 8
Records: SNHU 2-2 (0-2 Northeast-10 Conference), Adelphi 5-1 (3-0 Northeast-10 Conference)

Sophomore Joseph Mayernik (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored with 1:40 remaining in regulation to complete a four-goal second half comeback, but an Ian Kirby marker off the ensuing faceoff lifted No. 7 Adelphi University to a 9-8 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action at Larkin Field on Friday.

After trailing 7-3 at halftime, the Penmen scored twice in the third to trim their deficit to a pair heading into the fourth. Senior Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) fed classmate Cameron McGuire (Melrose, Mass.) 15 yards away from the cage, and McGuire unloaded a bounce shot that skipped to the back of the net to make it 7-4 at 2:46. Just under 10 minutes later, junior Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.)  rifled home a man-up goal from the exact same location on the field to cut the Panther advantage to two goals with 2:20 remaining in the quarter.

Adelphi reestablished a three-goal edge at 9:41 of the fourth, but Southern New Hampshire responded with a three-goal burst late in the period to knot the score at eight apiece. Senior Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) gathered the ball near midfield, blew past his defender, and ripped a shot five-hole on the Panthers' keeper to get the Penmen back within two at 10:12. On, the ensuing faceoff, senior Will Thompson (Southington, Conn.) scooped up a groundball in the Southern New Hampshire end of the field and raced along the left wing into the Adelphi zone. As Thompson drove towards the cage, he pulled up and sent a pass to a cutting Trainor, who went in all alone and tucked a shot to the top right corner as four defenders converged on him.  The tying tally came with under two minutes to go in regulation, as junior Devin Calkins (Bow, N.H.) rolled the cage and drew the attention of five Panthers' defenders before throwing a pass over the top to a wide open Mayernik. Mayernik caught the pass just outside the crease and sent a quick shot past the goalkeeper sliding across the net to make it 8-8. The stalemate was short-lived, however, as Mark Andrejack won the next faceoff, ran downfield and fed Gordon Purdie Jr., who then quick-sticked a pass over to Kirby on the doorstep. Kirby took one step before skipping the game-winner to the back of the net with 1:33 to play.

Senior Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) opened the game's scoring 1:32 into the first, when he rolled right from behind the net and bounced a shot to the far post from goal line extended. Adelphi answered with a four-goal run to close out the first, with Chris Racalbuto netting the equalizer midway through the frame before Nicolas Racalbuto put the visitors in front with 2:41 left in the quarter. Chris Lopez made it a 3-1 game at 13:02, and Purdie beat the clock on a shot with one second remaining to extend the lead to three.

Jacobs brought the Penmen back within two early in the second, as he drove right and fired a jump shot to the back of the cage at 4:55. After Purdie's second put the Panthers back in front by three, junior Corey Cairo (Wading River, N.Y.) took a pass from Calkins to the left of the net, turned and whipped a jump shot past Brendan McDougal with 8:50 left before the break. The remainder of the half belonged to Adelphi, which scored twice in the final 4:21 to balloon its lead to four.

Trainor led the Penmen offense with two goals, while McGuire recorded a goal and an assist. Calkins added a pair of helpers in support of senior Tyler Walsh (Northampton, Mass.), who steered aside six shots in the setback.

Notes:
- The Panthers went 12-for-20 at the faceoff X on Friday, including a 4-for-6 performance in the fourth quarter. Southern New Hampshire won the turnover battle (12:20), and also held a 37 to 30 edge in shots. Both teams were 1-for-2 on the man advantage.
- Trainor has registered at least one point in 19 of his last 20 appearances, which is a span that dates back to the 2015 season. 16 of those 19 games have been multipoint efforts.
- Heckman has tallied one or more points in 31 of his last 35 outings, and of those 31 games, he has at least two points in 26 contests.
