Men's Tennis Battles in 7-0 Defeat at #1 Hawaii Pacific

Junior Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) played his best tennis of the year and nearly grabbed a point at No. 2 singles, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team closed out its Hawaii trip with a 7-0 loss to top-ranked Hawaii Pacific University on Monday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Marreiros dropped the opening set of his No. 2 singles match with Gerard Rodriguez, 6-7, and then answered back with a 7-6 win of his own in the second set to send the match to a tiebreak, which Rodriguez narrowly pulled out, 10-8. 

Freshman Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherland) also played well at No. 5 singles, despite falling to Juan Erro, 5-7, 4-6.

Junior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) dropped a 4-6, 1-6 decision at No. 1 singles to the 34th-ranked player in the country in Torben Otto. 

Fernandez and van Biezen won the only games of doubles play for the Penmen as they fell to Filip Soban and Erro, 6-3, in the No. 2 slot.

Notes:
-Division I scoring was used, which awards one point for doubles play.
-Since notching the program's best start ever at 6-0, the Penmen have lost six straight, including three to nationally-ranked opponents.
-SNHU is ranked fourth in the Oracle/ITA East Regional Rankings.

The Penmen return to action Sunday, March 26 (1 p.m.) when they jump into conference play against Le Moyne College.
