Game One Score: Saint Anselm College 3, Southern New Hampshire University 2
Game Two Score: Saint Anselm College 1, Southern New Hampshire University 0
Junior Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) collected four hits on Thursday, but Saint Anselm College twice used its final at-bat to plate what proved to be the winning run and swept Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at the South Fields. The Hawks walked off in game one, 3-2, before scoring in the bottom of the sixth during game two for a 1-0 victory.
Perdigao went 2-for-3 and scored a run in Wednesday's first game before registering two of the three Penmen hits in the finale. Senior Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) and freshman Hannah Neverett (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in with a hit apiece in the opener before sophomore Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) tallied the third SNHU knock of the second game.
Neither side was able to generate any offense through the first three innings, as junior Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) and her counterpart, Sam Hennequin, allowed a combined three hits entering the bottom of the fourth. Saint Anselm led off the fourth with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners for Ellie Parravano, who pushed across the game's first run on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, Jordan O'Connor doubled down the line in right to knock in Parravano and make it 2-0.
Southern New Hampshire answered right back in the top half of the fifth to cut its deficit in half. After Torsiello worked a two-out walk, Neverett roped an RBI double to left to plate the first Penmen run of the afternoon.
Freshman Gabriella Vachon (Newton, Mass.) turned in a pair of 1-2-3 innings during the fifth and sixth to give SNHU an opportunity to knot things up in the seventh. Perdigao smacked a single through the left side before moving up to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.). Torsiello stepped in next and delivered a run-scoring single to center that allowed Perdigao to cruise in and make it a 2-2 ballgame.
The stalemate would be short-lived, however, as the Hawks used a pair of doubles in the seventh to walk off with the victory. Leiandra Wilson led off with a two-bagger to right center before Amanda Bickford duplicated the effort two batters later.
Vachon suffered the setback in the circle for Southern New Hampshire after allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout in 2.1 innings of relief. Lavallee went the first four innings on Thursday and surrendered two runs on five hits while fanning three and walking two. Hennequin picked up the win after a complete-game effort that saw her give up the two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
Game two was a pitchers' duel from the start and saw the Penmen and Hawks combine for a total of five hits. Southern New Hampshire put a pair of runners into scoring position over the course of the first two innings, but stranded both runners.
In the top of the fifth, SNHU had the best scoring chance up to that point in the game when it advanced a runner to third with just one away. Perdigao legged out an infield single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Senior Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) moved her up to third, but Morgan Perry was able to retire the ensuing two batters to keep the game scoreless.
On the other side of the ball, Gubellini was working on a no-hitter through the first five innings and had not allowed a Saint Anselm baserunner past first base. Erin Thompson broke up the no-hit bid with a lead-off single in the home half of the sixth. After the next two batters were retired Maggie Murphy connected on a double to left center that drove in the game's only run.
Perry returned for the seventh and set the Penmen down in order to finish a complete-game shutout that included four strikeouts, one walk and three hits allowed. Gubellini shifts to 4-2 on the year after going six innings and allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts and five walks.
Notes:
- Despite surrendering two points to Saint Anselm on Thursday, Southern New Hampshire still holds a 20-12 advantage in the 2016-17 Queen City Cup standings.
- The doubleheader sweep marks the first time the Penmen have not taken the regular season series from the Hawks since 2008-09 season. Southern New Hampshire had won every series since the 2009-10 season, with sweeps in four of the past seven seasons. SNHU is now 17-7 against Saint Anselm since the 2007-08 campaign.
