Senior Jessica Torsiello (Morris Plains, N.J.) delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning in game two on Saturday to lift the Southern New Hampshire University softball to a doubleheader split with Stonehill College. The Penmen fell in the opener, 2-1, before Torsiello drove in the lone run of the finale.

Freshman Maddy Barone (Halifax, Mass.) fired a complete-game, eight-inning, shutout for Southern New Hampshire. Barone scattered five hits and struck out five without issuing a walk.

Junior Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) started the rally in the eighth with an infield single, and advanced to second on an overthrow. After a groundout pushed Perdigao to third, the Skyhawks chose to intentionally walk both sophomore Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) and junior Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) to face Torsiello with the bases full. Torsiello took the first pitch wide of the strike zone before crushing the second offering she saw off the top of the wall in left to drive in Perdigao.

Barone cruised through most of game two, and in the only two innings she ran into trouble, Perdigao provided the defense to keep the game scoreless. After Stonehill led off the game with back-to-back singles, Erin Brayden reached on an error to load the bases. The following hitter ripped a line drive that appeared to be ticketed for left field, but Perdigao snared the ball and quickly flipped to third to complete an inning-ending double play.

The Skyhawks threatened again in the top of the fourth, as a base hit to lead off the frame was followed by a one-out double to put runners on second and third. The ensuing batter hit a groundball to short and Perdigao came up firing to the plate, where Garczynski applied the tag on a close play to hold the visitors off the board.

Torsiello finished 1-for-3 in Saturday's finale, while freshman Hannah Neverett (Nashua, N.H.) collected a pair of hits in three trips to the plate.

Jennifer Mayette suffered the setback for Stonehill after allowing just an unearned run in a complete-game effort. Mayette fanned three, walked a pair and surrendered seven hits in 7.2 innings of work.

Prior to the game two pitchers' duel, Mayette was locked in another battle with Penmen senior Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) in the opener. Gubellini recorded five punch outs through the first four innings and gave up just three hits, while Mayette registered two strikeouts and did not allow a Southern New Hampshire baserunner past second.

Both offenses came alive in the fifth, and the Skyhawks broke the scoreless stalemate with a pair of runs in the top of the frame. After a Caroline Casey sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with two away, Erin Brayden lined a double into the gap in left center to drive in Lianna Jordan and Michelle Carbone to make it 2-0.

The Penmen answered back in the home half of the inning and trimmed their deficit in half. Perdigao reached on an infield single that put runners on the corners with two down for junior Katie Horiuchi (Livingston, N.J.), and she smacked a single down the line in right that plated freshman Jordan Wade (East Taunton, Mass.) with the first Southern New Hampshire run of the afternoon. It would be as close as SNHU would get, as they were unable to push across the equalizer.

Mayette went the distance in the circle, and allowed just one unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts. Gubellini moved to 5-3 on the year after striking out nine and surrendering just the two runs.

Notes:
- The Penmen narrowly outhit the Skyhawks, 12-11, over the span of the two contests. SNHU held a 7-5 edge in game two, while Stonehill rapped out six hits in the opener.
- Both sides struggled defensively, as they combined for seven errors in the twinbill. The Skyhawks committed one in the first game and three in game two, while the Penmen were charged with one miscue in the opener and a pair in the finale.

What's Next:
Southern New Hampshire is idle until Wednesday (April 19) when it makes the trip to Rindge to battle Franklin Pierce University in a doubleheader slated to begin at 3 p.m.
