Seniors Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) and Daniel Trainor (Peabody, Mass.) each scored twice in the fourth quarter, as No. 16 Southern New Hampshire University found the back of the net six times in the final 15 minutes of play to earn a 12-8 victory over the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action on Sunday.
Heckman registered a game-high five points on a hat trick and two assists, while Trainor totaled four points with his fourth quarter goals and a pair of helpers. Junior Michael Brawley (Tewksbury, Mass.) earned the win in the Penmen cage with 11 stops.
After the two sides traded runs and goals through the first three quarters of Sunday's contest, senior Cameron McGuire (Melrose, Mass.) tallied his sixth of the season with less than a minute remaining in the third to give Southern New Hampshire a 6-5 edge heading into the fourth. It proved to be a momentum shifting marker, as the Penmen opened the fourth with a five-goal run that spanned the first 7:20 of the final frame. Trainor set up Heckman just six seconds in to extend the lead to a pair before junior Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.) found Trainor at 3:32 to push SNHU in front, 8-5. Junior Corey Cairo (Wading River, N.Y.) took a feed from Heckman and tucked home his eighth with just over 10 minutes remaining, and after Trainor netted his second of the stanza at 6:21, senior Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) capped the run by rifling home his 10th with 7:40 to play.
The scored remained unchanged for nearly six minutes before the Golden Knights used a man-up goal to trim the Penmen advantage to five with 1:44 left in regulation. It took only 17 seconds for Southern New Hampshire to answer, as Heckman completed his hat trick at 13:33 to put the game away. Saint Rose added a pair of goals in the final minute to provide the final margin of scoring.
Josh Frese staked the hosts to an early 1-0 lead with an extra-man goal 38 seconds into the first before the Penmen responded with a three-goal burst. Heckman knotted the score at one with 8:16 remaining in the quarter before he set up Jacobs for his first of the day at 8:25. Sophomore Joseph Mayernik (Pearl River, N.Y.) closed the first quarter scoring with his fifth of the year at 14:38 to put the Penmen in front, 3-1.
After Mayernik potted his second of the game four minutes into the second, the Golden Knights reeled off a three-goal run of their own to draw even. Justin Golec cut the hosts' deficit to a pair with 9:58 left in the quarter before Carter Badour made it a one-goal game 46 seconds later. Badour added his second of the period with just under four minutes to go before the half, and the two teams went into the intermission with the score tied at four. Junior Khyan Gaddy (Albany, N.Y.) reestablished the SNHU lead 3:46 into the third before Jordyn Marchiano's man-up goal at 5:56 reset the game.
Mayernik and Jacobs each finished with two goals for the Penmen, and Gaddy chipped in with a goal, an assist and three caused turnovers.
