Senior Keifer Heckman (Peabody, Mass.) scored six goals and totaled seven points, as No. 15 Southern New Hampshire University found the back of the net seven times in the fourth quarter to earn a 14-9 victory over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action at Larkin Field Wednesday.
Heckman registered two goals and an assist in the final 15 minutes of regulation to help the Penmen overcome an 8-7 deficit and post their fourth consecutive victory. Junior Corey Cairo (Wading River, N.Y.) scored twice and added a helper against the Purple Knights, while senior Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) potted a pair of goals.
After Saint Michael's closed the third quarter with a five-goal run that turned a 7-3 deficit into an 8-7 advantage, Heckman knotted the score less than 90 seconds into the fourth. Junior Zach Tanner (Woburn, Mass.) took the ball off the right alley and hit a cutting Heckman on the doorstep. Heckman gathered the pass, up faked the goalkeeper and finished the play by elevating and tucking a shot just inside the far post.
Cairo put Southern New Hampshire back in front just over five minutes into the final stanza on a brilliant individual effort. Cairo found himself matched up one-on-one with a long pole and drove down the right alley before cutting toward the back of the cage at goal line extended. He absorbed a slash from the Purple Knights' defender, and after briefly losing possession behind the net, Cairo gathered the loose ball, rolled the cage and whipped a shot five-hole with 9:23 left in regulation to make it 10-9.
Patch Ryan drew Saint Michael's even at the midway point of the fourth, but it took Cairo only 1:31 to deposit what proved to be the game-winner. The play started with senior Cameron McGuire (Melrose, Mass.) darting to his right and throwing a shot across his body on frame. After the initial attempt was stopped, the ball bounced out of the keeper's stick and into the air along the edge of the crease. Cairo snatched the ball in midair, stepped around the netminder, and collected his second of quarter, which in turn sparked a five-goal Penmen run to close the contest.
Sophomore Joseph Mayernik (Pearl River, N.Y.) extended the Southern New Hampshire lead to a pair with 4:14 left in regulation after he rifled home his seventh of the year before senior Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) unloaded a howitzer to the top left corner from Heckman at 11:38. After Heckman's sixth of the afternoon came with 2:55 to play, Jacobs fed Trainor, who's second of the day capped the game's scoring.
Heckman opened the scoring 5:18 into the first quarter, as he spun past a defender behind the net, dodged under him on the doorstep and went high on the netminder to make it 1-0. Back-to-back goals by the Purple Knights put the visitors ahead at 12:06, but Heckman bookended the period by firing a shot short side that skipped into the back of the net with 11 seconds remaining.
The Penmen came out strong in the second quarter to the tune of a four-goal run that lasted more than nine minutes. Junior Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.) started the run with a deep man-up marker from sophomore Tom Schutz (Trumbull, Conn.) at 3:12. Senior Will Thompson (Southington, Conn.) followed with his first of the season with 10:03 left before the half, and Trainor's first of the contest at 7:28 put the hosts ahead, 5-2. Junior Devin Calkins (Bow, N.H.) set up Heckman for his third of the opening half with 2:25 to play before a Saint Michael's tally in the final minute of the quarter made it 6-3 at the break.
Heckman buried his fourth 1:51 into the third quarter, but the Purple Knights bounced back with five consecutive scores to put them ahead by one through 45 minutes of play.
Senior Tyler Walsh (Northampton, Mass.) stopped 10 shots in the Southern New Hampshire cage to up his record to 3-2 while his counterpart, Matt Hanley, suffered the setback despite registering 20 saves.
