Successful Opening Day of ITA East Regional Championships for Men's Tennis

When and Where: September 22, 2017 – Flushing, N.Y. (USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center)

Five of the seven members of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team are living on following the opening day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships on Friday at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

In the doubles main draw, seniors Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal), seeded fourth, defeated Merrimack College's Alex Slobin and Thomas O'Brien, 8-3. They will next play the University of the Sciences' Chandat Phan and William Bentley, who took down Post University's Cole Nelson and Steve Woodfield, 8-6, to move on.

Sophomore Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) and graduate student Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) doubled up Chestnut Hill College's Lucas Bocaletto and Pedro Regalin, 8-4, and will next play Concordia (N.Y.) College's Michele Fenoaltea and Henry Masters, who edged Post's Rassel and Nick Engelman, 9-7.

Seniors Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) were toppled by Chestnut Hill's Andre Felix and Antoine Gautier, seeded 16th, 8-1.

In singles qualifying, the top-seeded Aubron, who received a bye in the opening round, defeated Roberts Wesleyan College's Timothy Nacca, 8-1. Aubron will next meet the University of the District of Columbia's Diego Pinto, who automatically qualified for the main draw.

Miguel Marreiros, seeded second, also received a bye and then blanked St. Thomas Aquinas College's Paul Voigt, 8-0. Marreiros will take on Le Moyne College's Hallam Doney, who was an 8-4 winner over Daemen College's Fabian Wilde, in the opening round of the main draw. Overall No. 2 seed Nikola Crvelin would then await.

van Biezen, the 28th seed, also earned a bye and then slipped by Concordia (N.Y.) College's Lars Olson, 8-6. van Biezen will play another Clipper next in William Nilsson.

In a Queen City showdown, Reichentahl defeated Saint Anselm College's Daniel Kmetz, 8-2, before falling, 8-1, to STAC's Andreu Ferragut-Lluch.

Junior Faizan Khalid (Manchester, N.H.) was shut out by Queens (N.Y.) College's Nick Volos, 8-0.

The main draw's third seed, Fernandes has garnered a bye in the first round after his automatic qualification and will meet the winner of UDC's Josip Marinic and Jefferson University's Liviu Trifoi.

Ricardo Marreiros, seeded seventh in the main draw, will earn a first-round bye after automatically qualifying and will await the winner of Chestnut Hill's Gautier and Adelphi University's David Robres de Veciana.
