Seniors Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team advanced to the round of 16 in the singles main draw Saturday at the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Fernandes, who is seeded third and received a bye in the opening round, needed to come from behind to move on, as he eventually took care of Jefferson University's Liviu Trifoi, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. Fernandes will next meet Le Moyne College's Philip Blythe, who advanced with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Concordia (N.Y.) College's Axel Oljons.
Marreiros, meanwhile, also needed to rally against Blythe's doubles partner, Hallan Doney, winning 1-6, 6-2, 10-5. Marreiros then pulled the upset of the tournament to this point, dispatching second-seeded Nikola Crvelin of Post University, 6-4, 7-5. Marreiros will face Concordia's Eymeric Chevalier, who breezed past Le Moyne's Andres Hernandez, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the round of 16.
Graduate student Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) defeated the University of the District of Columbia's Diego Pinto, 6-4, 6-1, but faltered in his second match, losing to the New York Institute of Technology's Francisco Caldas, 7-5, 6-2.
Senior Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal), seeded seventh, was upset following his opening-round bye, as he was tripped up by Chestnut Hill College's Antoine Gautier, 6-1, 7-6 (5-3). Sophomore Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) also made an early exit, falling to Concordia's William Nilsson, 6-3, 6-1.
In the doubles main draw, however, van Biezen is still alive. van Biezen and Aubron snuck by Concordia's Michele Fenoaltea and Henry Masters, 9-8 (9-7) and then toppled third-seeded Cosme Jubera and Roman Laga of Queens (N.Y.) College by the same score. van Biezen and Aubron, the only unseeded team of the eight remaining in the bracket, will meet ninth-seeded Blythe and Doney from Le Moyne, who advanced with an 8-6 win over seventh-seeded Matej Selecky and Alexandre Martinez of NYIT, in the quarterfinals.
The fourth-seeded Marreiros brothers won their first match, defeating Post University's Chandat Phan and William Bentley, 8-1, before winding up on the wrong end of an upset against 14th-seeded George Samander and Brendan McCarthy of Bentley University, dropping an 8-5 decision.
