Fernandes Falls to Top Seed at ITA East Regional Championship

When and Where: September 25, 2017 – Flushing, N.Y. (USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center)

Seniors Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team saw his strong run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships come to a close Monday at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Fernandes, the third seed and the first ever men's tennis player to reach the semifinals of the singles main draw, fell just one match short of the final. Dealing with an illness that he had battled the entire tournament, as well as the scorching heat and humidity, Fernandes gave top-seeded Matej Selecky of the New York Institute of Technology all he could handle for three sets. Selecky breezed to a 6-2 win in the opening set, but Fernandes did not give in, clawing back into the match with a 7-5 victory to send it to a third and final set. Selecky would come away triumphant with a 6-1 win.
