Freshman Brooke Freckleton (Red Cliffs, Australia) recorded a career-best seven kills, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (25-22, 25-20, 26-24) to Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Pelz Gymnasium.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Freckleton's seven kills came on .267 hitting.
- Junior Irem Bat (Istanbul, Turkey) posted eight kills, eight digs and a pair of blocks.
- Junior Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded seven kills, a service ace, 13 digs and a block.
- Senior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) tallied 15 assists and five digs.
- Senior Priscila Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) notched five kills and five digs.
- Senior Shaira Sanabria (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) collected 14 digs.
- Junior Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in six assists and eight digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern New Hampshire trailed, 20-17, in the opening set when kills from Castro and Freckleton highlighted a 4-1 spurt that knotted the score at 21-all. Southern Connecticut responded with a 4-1 run of its own to go up 1-0 in the match, with Gabriela Vazquez sparking the stretch with a kill and two aces.
- The second set was tied, 12-12, when a kill and ace from Leanna Jadus carried a 3-0 spurt that put the Owls in front for good at 15-12. The Penmen would only get as close as two the rest of the way, with SCSU tallying four of the final six points in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
- SNHU was behind, 23-15, when it ripped off a 9-1 run that tied the third set at 24-all. A Vazquez kill and Penmen error, however, gave Southern Connecticut the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Southern Connecticut outhit SNHU in the final two sets, as well as .128-.106 for the match.
- The Owls held a 12-5 advantage in total blocks.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire had won seven of its last eight, which was the program's best stretch since Sept. 8-Oct. 2, 2012 when it captured eight of nine.
