Junior Irem Bat (Istanbul, Turkey) notched a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team fell to Stonehill College, 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 19-25, 25-19), Tuesday evening at Merkert Gymnasium.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Bat also added two service aces and four blocks to her stat line.
- Junior Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) posted six kills, six digs and two blocks.
- Junior Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded six kills, four digs and a pair of blocks.
- Senior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) dished 29 assists to go with an ace and five digs.
- Freshman Isabelle Wild (Pompano Beach, Fla.) turned in a career-high five kills and two blocks.
- Senior Shaira Sanabria (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) collected 13 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern New Hampshire gathered the first three points of the match, but a 14-4 rush from Stonehill put it in the lead, 14-7. The Skyhawks increased their advantage to 24-13 when kills from freshman Ramona Fontaine (Chelsea, Mass.) and senior Priscila Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), and an ace from Bat, made up a 4-0 run, the ensuing service error gave Stonehill a 1-0 lead in the match.
- Stonehill built a 17-12 lead in set No. 2 before closing on an 8-3 run, including a Sophia Poveda kill that made it 2-0.
- The Penmen held a 21-19 edge in a close third set when a Bat kill sparked a 4-0 run that put SNHU on the board and sliced the Stonehill lead in half at 2-1.
- The Skyhawks clung to a 13-12 lead when a 6-1 spurt gave them some breathing room at 19-13. Southern New Hampshire would climb to within 23-19, but kills from Abby Remick and Poveda put the Penmen away.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Stonehill outhit SNHU in three of the four sets, as well as .207-.153 for the match.
- The Penmen held a 16-11 advantage in total blocks.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, after winning seven of eight, has now lost two straight.
- This was the 10th double-digit kill performance of the season for Bat, who has notched six of them in the last eight matches.
