Juniors Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) and Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) netted 13 and 12 points, respectively, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team absorbed a 61-54 loss to Saint Anselm College on Wednesday evening in its first game ever at the SNHU Arena.
Lorenzen was 5-for-20 from the field, including 1-for-2 from long range, and 2-for-4 at the line, while grabbing six rebounds. Camara narrowly missed a double-double, as she collected nine rebounds, to go with two assists and two steals, while going 3-for-8 from the floor, including 2-for-4 from deep, and a perfect 4-for-4 from the stripe. Freshman Gyanna Russell (E. Hampton, Conn.) was also in double figures with 10 points (4-10 FG, 2-3 FT), four boards and a pair of steals.
Shannon Ryan led the Hawks with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Ali Glennon and Clairee Putnam added 17 and 15 points, respectively.
The opening five-plus minutes of the contest featured four lead changes before a Glennon trey at the 4:27 mark gave Saint Anselm the lead for good at 10-8 and sparked a 6-2 spurt that made it a six-point game. The Hawks would lead, 14-12, after one quarter of play.
Seven points from Glennon and four from Ryan carried a 13-6 run to open the second stanza and widen the Saint Anselm advantage to 27-18 at the midway point. A Glennon triple later in the frame pushed the lead to an even 10 at 32-22 – the largest of the game for the Hawks – before a three-point play from Russell capped the scoring to trim the Penmen deficit to 32-25 at the break.
A 5-0 flurry – capped by a Lorenzen trifecta – pulled SNHU within a pair at 36-34 midway through the third quarter. The teams then swapped baskets before a pair of Ryan field goals bookended a Putnam 3-pointer to extend the Saint Anselm lead to 45-36. A trey from senior Catherine Stinson (Lynn, Mass.) before the buzzer sliced the Southern New Hampshire deficit to 45-39 going to the final frame.
A three-point play from senior Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) opened the fourth-quarter scoring to make it a one-possession game before the teams traded 5-0 runs over the ensuing three minutes. The Penmen would whittle the gap to a pair at 53-51 with 2:16 to go, but Saint Anselm answered with five consecutive points to stretch the margin to seven at 58-51 with 37 ticks left. A Russell layup made it a five-point contest before the Hawks made three of four free throws to seal it.
Stinson tallied six points (2-14 FG, 2-6 3-FG), four steals and three rebounds, with freshman Sarah Deyo (Attleboro, Mass.) posting four points (2-3 FG) and five boards. Conrad chipped in three points (1-3 FG, 1-1 FT), two rebounds and two assists off the bench.
