Score: Mercy College 16, Southern New Hampshire University 8
Records: Mercy 5-1, SNHU 2-1
Senior Mark Beirne (Hooksett, N.H.) and junior Tom Schutz (Trumbull, Conn.) each scored a pair of goals and handed out an assist, but the 19th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team fell to 17th-ranked Mercy College, 16-8, Saturday at Penmen Stadium.
Southern New Hampshire fell behind, 1-0, over a minute into the game before freshman Cole Jacobsen (Dartmouth, Mass.) tied it just over a minute later. Mercy again went up one just over a minute later, but a Schutz tally with 6:49 remaining in the opening quarter pulled the Penmen even, 2-2. Beirne then set up senior Chris West (Albany, N.Y.) with 1:29 to go to give SNHU what would be its only lead of the game, as Mercy tied it just 17 seconds later to cap the first-quarter scoring.
Mercy would score the first three goals of the second stanza, including two from Dominic Scortia, before an unassisted Schutz strike trimmed the Southern New Hampshire deficit to 6-4 with 4:02 left before the break. The Mavericks would score twice in the final 90 seconds of the half, however, to bring an 8-4 advantage into the locker room.
The visitors scored six of the first seven goals of the third quarter, including three from Bobby Chillianis, to run the score to 14-5 with 6:13 to play. Senior Devin Calkins (Bow, N.H.) answered a minute later off a Schutz feed, but Mercy's Ryan MacSpadyen would gain the hat trick with 3:06 left to make it 15-6 going to the final frame.
Beirne and Jacobsen began the fourth quarter with unassisted goals to make it a seven-score game, but that was as close as the Penmen would get.
Notes:
- Mercy won 17 of the game's 28 faceoffs and held a 41-37 advantage in shots.
- The Penmen were whistled for 10 penalties, compared to just three for the Mavericks.
- Senior Michael Brawley (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman Neal Murray (Marblehead, Mass.) each stopped five of 13 shots as they split the first and second half, respectively. Mercy goalkeeper Ryan Gibbons made 16 saves.
