Score: No. 8 Adelphi University 17, Southern New Hampshire University 9
Records: SNHU 2-3 (0-2 Northeast-10), Adelphi 4-1 (3-0 Northeast-10)
Senior Zach Tanner (Woburn, Mass.) tied a career-high with four points on Saturday and freshman Neal Murray (Marblehead, Mass.) turned aside 19 shots in his first career start, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team fell on the road to No. 8 Adelphi University, 17-9.
Tanner led the Penmen offense with two goals and two assists, while classmate Corey Cairo (Shoreham, N.Y.) also scored twice in the setback. In his first start and third career appearance, Murray registered 13 saves in the first half before steering away six more in the final 30 minutes of play.
The hosts opened the scoring just over two minutes into the contest when John Arcidiacono converted a feed from Ian Kirby to make it 1-0 at 2:09. The game remained a one-goal affair for the ensuing eight-plus minutes until freshman Mason Barchard (Chester, N.H.) found Cairo for his 10th goal of the year with 4:51 to go in the quarter before the Panthers pulled ahead with 16 seconds left on Nicolas Racalbuto's first of the afternoon to carry a 2-1 edge into the second.
Senior Chris West (Albany, N.Y.) opened the second stanza with his fourth of the year at 2:13 to knot the score back up at two apiece, but Adelphi responded with a three-goal burst in 1:07, including two off the stick of Racalbuto, to open up a 5-2 advantage. Senior Mark Beirne (Hooksett, N.H.) stopped the run when he tallied his sixth with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half to trim the deficit back to a pair, but a four-goal spurt by the Panthers pushed them in front, 9-3, with 3:21 left before the intermission. Tanner drew Southern New Hampshire one-goal close at 12:25 when he deposited his first of the day to send the teams to the half with the score at 9-4.
Adelphi opened the second half with back-to-back goals at 1:11 and 3:39 before senior John Miller (Bedford, Mass.) cashed in on a feed from Tanner with 10:14 to go in the third to make it 11-5. After a Panthers' goal midway through the frame reestablished a seven-goal cushion, Cairo answered with his second of the contest at 11:32 to trim the deficit back to six.
It would be as close as the Penmen would come for the remainder of the game, as Adelphi closed out the third with another four-goal run before adding a fifth-straight marker to start the fourth to extend its lead to 17-6. Southern New Hampshire closed the game with three consecutive goals, as freshman Cole Jacobsen (Dartmouth, Mass.) found the back of the net with help from Tanner before junior Joseph Mayernik (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Tanner added goals to provide the final margin of scoring.
