Senior Zach Tanner (Woburn, Mass.) registered three points and freshman Cole Jacobsen (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team fell to Assumption College, 16-7, Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Stadium.
Tanner scored a goal and dished two assists, while junior Tom Schutz (Trumbull, Conn.) and senior Khyan Gaddy (Albany, N.Y.) each recorded a goal and assist.
Assumption led, 4-0, after the first quarter and then scored the first three goals of the second stanza to stretch the advantage to 7-0 more than six minutes in. The Penmen finally made it onto the board at the 8:19 mark, taking advantage of an extra-man opportunity, as Schutz connected on a pass to Jacobsen. The Greyhounds would score two more before freshman Mason Barchard (Chester, N.H.) struck with just 12 seconds on the clock off a Gaddy feed to cut the halftime deficit to 9-2.
Assumption mirrored its first quarter in the third, scoring all four goals to balloon its lead to 13-2 going to the final frame. The Greyhounds would score three of the first four goals in the fourth to go up, 16-3, with 4:32 remaining, before Gaddy and senior John Miller (Bedford, N.H.) found the back of the net, with Tanner setting up Jacobsen's second of the day and then scoring his own goal inside the final two minutes to cap the scoring.
Notes:
- Freshman Neal Murray (Marblehead, Mass.) made eight saves over the opening three quarters, with senior Michael Brawley (Tewksbury, Mass.) stopping three of the six shots he faced over the final 15 minutes. Assumption's Colby Hamwey turned aside 19 of the 22 shots that came his way over the initial 54:05. Chris Schultz made one save during the next 4:44, while John DeMott did not see a bid in the final 1:11.
- Southern New Hampshire outshot Assumption, 41-36, including 18-7 in the fourth quarter, and won 16 of the game's 27 faceoffs.
- The Greyhounds were 2-for-4 on extra-man opportunities, while the Penmen went just 1-for-5.
