Junior Tom Schutz(Trumbull, Conn.) buried a team-high four goals, including three during a game-changing third quarter, to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team to a 15-10 victory against American International on Saturday afternoon at Penmen Stadium.
The seniors came to play on Senior Day, as Devin Calkins(Bow, N.H.) and Corey Cairo(Shoreham, N.Y.) both added three goals, while fellow seniors Mark Beirne(Hooksett, N.H.) andJohn Miller(Bedford, N.H.) also contributed three points each with a goal and two assists.
Southern New Hampshire fell behind, 3-0, over the opening nine-plus minutes of the game, before it erupted for four of the final five goals of the first quarter. Calkins put the Penmen on the board off an assist from Beirne at the 5:09 mark, with Miller making it a one-goal game just over a minute later. Senior Chris West(Albany, N.Y.) and freshman Jayden Jean(Malden, Mass.) found the back of the net over the final three minutes to tie the game, 4-4.
The teams alternated goals in the second quarter, with Schutz answering both Yellow Jacket goals, including one with eight-tenths-of-a-second on the clock to knot the game at six going to halftime.
The Penmen came out of the break on a mission, taking their first lead of the contest just 1:15 in on a Calkins strike, which began a run of five straight goals that put Southern New Hampshire in front, 11-6, with 8:35 remaining in the third quarter.
AIC would score its only goal of the stanza at the 8:02 mark, before back-to-back tallies from Cairo set off a four-goal run that sent the Penmen to the final frame with a 15-7 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets would score all three goals in the fourth quarter, including one with less than six seconds on the clock.Â
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire outshot AIC, 47-31, including 29-15 in the middle two frames.
- SNHU won the groundball battle, 35-23, and dominated the faceoff X, 21-8, with senior Bryan Daly (Woburn, Mass.) going 13-for-18.
- Senior Michael Brawley (Tewksbury, Mass.) stopped five of the 11 shots he faced between the pipes for the Penmen in the first half, while sophomore Jacob Dionne (Windham, Maine) earned the victory to improve to 3-1 on the season with three saves on seven shots in the second half. Jacob Ortiz made 11 saves for the Yellow Jackets.
- Seniors Calkins, Cairo, Beirne, Miller, West, Daly, Brawley, Khyan Gaddy (Albany, N.Y.), Zach Tanner (Woburn, Mass.), Cam Rewucki( Dover, N.H.) and Paul Accorsi (Springfield, Mass.) were all honored in a ceremony prior to the game.
