When and Where: April 28, 2018 – Syracuse, N.Y. (Ted Grant Field)
Score: No. 1 Le Moyne College 16, Southern New Hampshire University 10
Records: SNHU 5-9 (3-8 Northeast-10), Le Moyne 15-0 (11-0 Northeast-10)
Senior Zach Tanner (Woburn, Mass.) registered four points and classmate Corey Cairo (Shoreham, N.Y.) added a hat trick in their final career games, but a 14-goal first half propelled top-ranked Le Moyne College past the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team, 16-10.
Tanner led the way for the Penmen with two goals and two assists, while Cairo found the back of the net three times and fellow senior Mark Beirne (Hooksett, N.H.) chipped in with a pair of helpers.
Devin Andrews shouldered the offensive load for the Dolphins with a game-high six points on a goal and five assists, while Justin Kesselring tallied five goals in the triumph.
Le Moyne raced out to a quick three-goal lead, as Josh Slowinski opened the scoring 1:18 into the opening quarter before a pair of Kesselring markers provided the hosts with a 3-0 advantage with 10:36 remaining. Cairo stopped the run when he cashed in a feed from Beirne at 5:25, but it would be all the offense Southern New Hampshire could muster in the opening half, and the Dolphins scored the next 11 goals en route to a 14-1 halftime advantage.
The Penmen stormed out of the intermission in an attempt to mount a comeback and notched six of the seven goals scored in the third quarter. Junior Tom Schutz (Trumbull, Conn.) opened the second half scoring with his 22nd of the season from freshman Mason Barchard (Chester, N.H.), and after Le Moyne added another tally, SNHU reeled off five-straight to trim the deficit to single digits. Junior Joseph Mayernik (Pearl River, N.Y.) found the back of the cage midway through the frame before senior Chris West (Albany, N.Y.) deposited his ninth with 6:30 remaining. After Tanner set up Cairo for his second of the day, Tanner drilled home his 21st to make it 15-6. Cairo closed out the third by completing his hat trick with help from Beirne at 12:31 before Tanner struck for his second of the day 2:34 into the fourth.
Hans Zimmer accounted for the final Dolphin goal at 5:51 of the fourth before freshman Cole Jacobsen (Dartmouth, Mass.) and senior Devin Calkins (Bow, N.H.) capped the game's scoring in the final five minutes of play.
