Sophomore Irem Bat (Istanbul, Turkey) registered a team-high 14 kills in two matches, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team closed out the Vulcan Invitational with a pair of 3-0 losses to Indiana (Pa.) University and Mercyhurst University on Saturday at California (Pa.) University's Hamer Hall. Set scores against the Crimson Hawks were 25-16, 25-22 and 25-14, while they were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-12 in the match with the Lakers.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
Indiana (Pa.) Match
- Bat posted six kills and 10 digs.
- Junior Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y matched Bat's six kills on .238 hitting.
- Senior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) recorded eight assists and six digs, while sophomore Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) added seven and five, respectively.
- Senior Priscila Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and freshman Megan Palmer (Prior Lake, Minn.) each collected 11 digs.
Mercyhurst Match
- Bat again led the way with eight kills and six digs.
- Dillon tallied six kills, 10 assists and seven digs.
- Coffey dished 13 helpers and recorded a service ace.
- Senior Shaira Sanabria (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) notched 10 digs.
- Freshman Isabelle Wild (Pompano Beach, Fla.) added four kills on .444 hitting, while Maguire also had four kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Indiana (Pa.) Match
- Indiana (Pa.) held a 9-8 lead in the opening set when a 12-5 run – highlighted by five kills from Kylie Osborn – ballooned the advantage to 21-13. The Crimson Hawks would then win four of the final seven points to go up, 1-0.
- IUP built a 10-4 advantage out of the gate in set No. 2, but the Penmen would chip away and get to within 24-22 when a Madi Burns kill made it 2-0.
- The third set was tied, 8-8, when a 17-6 rush by the Crimson Hawks clinched the match.
Mercyhurst Match
- Mercyhurst went in front, 11-4, in the first set and expanded the lead to 22-12 before taking three of the final six points to go up, 1-0, in the match.
- The second set was even at 16-all when the Lakers ended the stanza on a 9-2 run to take a 2-0 lead.
- Mercyhurst left no doubt in the third set, crafting a 21-7 lead before cruising to victory.
