Penmen Win Twice To Finish Myrtle Beach Swing 5-1

Top Performances:
Gabby Vachon went 2-for-2 with two homers and finished up for a save in the 6-4 win over Kutztown State.  
Emily Carbonneau was 2-for-2 with a double, homer and four RBI in the 11-0 win over Clarion College.
Olivia Strasser went 3-0, tossing three complete games on the trip with just one run allowed (17 innings).

Game One:  SNHU 6 Kutztown State 4 

In the first game of the day, SNHU trailed the Golden Bears 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.  Five runs in the fifth and sixth rallied the Penmen to the win.

The Penmen trailed 1-0 when they came up in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) walked and scored on a double by senior Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) to tie the game.

SNHU made it 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when junior Gabriella Vachon (Newton, Mass.) homered to right-center.  

The decisive sixth inning started with a single by junior Jordan Wade (East Taunton, Mass.), who moved to second on a ground out.  An RBI single by sophomore Coralie Mathieu (Methuen, Mass.) brought Wade home as SNHU closed to within 4-3.   Sophomore third baseman Emily Critch (Halifax, Mass.) drilled a home run to right-center to give the Penmen its first lead of the game.  Vachon then followed with her second home run of the game to make the final 6-4.

Sophomore Ali Atherton (Milford, Mass.) earned the win (1-0) in relief, facing seven batters without allowing a run.  Vachon came on to record the final three outs in the top of the seventh inning for her first save of the season.

Game Two:  SNHU 11 Clarion 0

The Penmen rolled to a fifth consecutive win in the second game of the day, 11-0, over Clarion.  

The first five batters for SNHU reached in the bottom of the first inning, and all scored.  The frame featured an RBI double by freshman Emily Carbonneau (Lowell, Mass.) and an RBI single by Vachon.

Carbonneau hit a three-run homer in the second inning to stake the Penmen to an 8-0 lead.

RBI singles by freshman Brittany Mota (Lowell, Mass.) and junior Erin Tyrrell (Milford, N.H.) came in a three-run fourth inning as the lead swelled to 11-0.

Sophomore Olivia Strasser (Rutland, Mass.) improved to 3-0 with her third complete-game victory, allowing just one hit, walking one, and striking out four batters.

Notes:

Southern New Hampshire concluded play in the Myrtle Beach Freeze-Out with a 5-1 record.  The Penmen dropped a 5-4 decision to Slippery Rock to start the trip, then won five consecutive games.

Strasser went the distance starting the second game on each day of the trip.  She finished having allowed just one run in 17 innings pitched.

Up Next:

SNHU will be off until March 9 when they start a trip to Florida with games against the University of Indianapolis and Grand Valley State University.

The first home game for SNHU is scheduled for Sunday, March 24 against Queens College.
