Historic Men's Tennis Season Draws to Close with 4-0 Loss to #3 Hawaii Pacific in NCAA Round of 16

A history-making season for the 50th-ranked and 14th-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team came to an end Tuesday with a 4-0 loss to third-ranked and third-seeded Hawaii Pacific University in the NCAA Round of 16 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hawaii Pacific earned the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Juniors Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) and Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) held a 5-3 lead on Valentin Masse and Maxime Gayte at No. 1 when the point was clinched.
  • Masse, the 21st-ranked singles player in the country toppled graduate student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) at No. 1 to increase the HPU lead to 2-0.
  • The Sharks then made it 3-0 with Lukas Bauer's No. 6 win over grad student Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal), before Cheng-Chieh Wang defeated grad student Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) at No. 5 to clinch the match.

NOTES

  • Bas van Biezen was locked in a 6-6 (7-7) tie with Gayte, the 39th-ranked singles player in the nation, at No. 4 when the match ended.
  • Southern New Hampshire, which had won 14 straight, was playing in its first NCAA Round of 16 in program history. SNHU was also the first NE10 program to make the Round of 16 since Assumption College in 2002.
  • SNHU's 17 wins fall one shy of the program record set in 2013-14.
  • The Penmen, making their ninth NCAA Championship appearance, are now to 2-8 all-time in the NCAA postseason.
  • Fernandes wraps up his career with a program-record of 80 singles victories.
