Sophomore Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) went 2-0 Wednesday and clinched the match with a No. 4 singles win, as the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team squeaked past Lees-McRae College, 4-3, at the USTA National Campus.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Torres edged Miodrag Popovic, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4 singles and teamed with junior Guido Janssen (Zeewolde, Netherlands) to claim a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against Jofre Tura-Campalans and Patryk Garwacki.
- Janssen also won his No. 5 singles match against Matt Meluch, 6-4, 6-2.
- Senior Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) breezed past Hanquing Wang, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles and also combined with his brother and classmate Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) to double-up Popovic and Wang, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles to clinch the point.
- Sophomore Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) and freshman Oscar Hawken (Oslo, Norway) defeated Fitzgerald Lomp and Meluch, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.

- The Penmen are the No. 2-ranked team in the ITA East Region Rankings.
- Willem van Biezen is No. 14 in the nation in singles, as well as the top-ranked player in the East Region, while Bas van Biezen is 49th in the country and No. 2 in the region. As a doubles tandem, the duo is sixth, regionally.
- Vacalares is No. 19 in singles in the region. He fell to Tura-Campalans, 6-0, 2-6, 11-9, at No. 2.
