The SNHU softball team split a pair of games in Florida on Friday, defeating Saint Thomas Aquinas and falling to Saginaw State.
KEY MOMENTS - GAME 1
- Senior Maddy Barone (Halifax, Mass.) allowed one earned run over 7.1 innings to pick up the win in game one. She struck out five, allowing only four hits.
- Junior Shay Sauvageau (Griswold, Conn.) doubled in a pair of runs in the third inning as the Penmen built a 3-0 lead over Saint Thomas Aquinas.
- The Spartans rallied to tie with two unearned runs in the sixth inning, and another in the seventh.
- In the last of the eighth inning, Sauvageau bunted sophomore Emily Carbonneau (Lowell, Mass.), the extra runner, to third.
- Junior Jackie Gavin (East Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in the winning run with a fielders choice.
KEY MOMENTS - GAME 2
- The Penmen gave up five runs in the first inning, and could not recover in the 8-0 loss to Saginaw Valley.
- The only hit for SNHU came on a single by Carbonneau in the top of the second inning, and she was stranded at third after a couple of walks.
- Sarah Gersch homered twice for the Cardinals. She led off the bottom of the first with a home run, and added another, leading off the fourth inning.
NOTES
- The games were the first for SNHU this season.  They will play doubleheaders on eight of the ten days they will be in Florida through Sunday, March 15.
UP NEXT
- The Penmen are back in action Saturday, March 7 when they face Wayne State (Mich.) at 9:00 a.m. and Bridgeport at 1:30 p.m.
