MANCHESTER, N.H. – Graduate student Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, The Netherlands) and junior Hélène Servais (Brussels, Belgium) of the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team were named to the the Academic All-District At-Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), on Thursday.
van der Doorn and Servais are two of 11 student-athletes from across 14 different sports to earn the accolade in District 1. They make up two of the three field hockey players on the list, are the only teammates to be recognized and the only student-athletes from the same institution.
van der Doorn, who was crowned SNHU's Female Athlete of the Year last week, submitted the most decorated campaign in program history, becoming Penmen field hockey's first NFHCA All-America First Team honoree, in addition to being named both the NFHCA East Region and Northeast-10 Player of the Year. Earning her second straight NE10 First Team nod, van der Doorn registered 15 goals and five assists for 35 points, as she established a new program record for goals. She also had two separate goals appear on ESPN SportsCenter's "Top 10." The captain ranked eighth in the nation in goals and 11th in points, while placing first and second in conference in those respective categories. van der Doorn, who was pursuing her Master's degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and had posted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, was also exquisite in the classroom, earning multiple academic accolades, including the NFHCA Division II National Scholar-Athlete and NE10 Sport Excellence Award, in addition to seeing her name on the Zag Sports/NFHCA National Academic Squad and Scholars of Distinction lists.
Servais, an international business major with a 3.91 GPA, joined van der Doorn as one of the program's first All-Americans, in addition to being chosen as an NE10 All-Conference First Teamer, NE10 Academic All-Conference honoree and Zag Sports/NFHCA National Academic Squad selection. Servais finished the season first in the NE10 with 15 goals and 12 assists for 42 points. Servais was sixth in the country in total scoring and eighth in points per game (1.91), and she ranked in the top-five nationally in assists and assists per game. Servais registered at least one point in 14 games, notched nine multi-point efforts, recorded seven games of three or more points, and turned in a pair of five-, one six- and one seven-point performance on separate occasions.
The 2020 Academic All-District® Men's At-Large Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Honorees selected first-team Academic All-District® will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. Academic All-America® honorees will be announced from June 16-19.
The Division II CoSIDA Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Divisions II Academic All-America® programs.
