SNHU Graduate Students Ashley Corcoran (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) ran two of the five fastest 6k races in program history as the Penmen faced top competition Friday at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.

TOP PERFORMANCES
  • Corcoran had the fastest run of the day for SNHU with a 21:57.9, which ranks as the fourth fastest in program history.  She finished 134th in a field of top runners from around the nation.
  • Couto finished a little more than second behind Corcoran at 21:59.0, the fifth fastest 6k for an SNHU runner.  It was also a PR for Couto.
  • Sophomore Kelsey Seamans (Methuen, Mass.) turned a career-best at 22:37.3, which ranks among the top twenty performances all-time by a Penmen.
  • Also scoring for the Penmen were junior Sarah Zarakotas (Deerfield, N.H.) in 23:19.5 and sophomore Kaitlyn O'Rourke (Braintree, Mass.) in 23:23.5.
NOTES
  • SNHU finished 34th of 38 teams competing in the event, which was won by Northern Arizona in a tie-breaker with Villanova.  Northern Arizona's Taryn O'Neill won the race in 19:54.8. 
  • Six Penmen established 6k personal bests in the race, including Couto, Zarakotas, Seamans, and O'Rourke.  Also turning in PB's were sophomore Hannah Bradbury (Seekonk, Mass.) and sophomore Riley McDermott (Kennebunkport, Maine).
  • The Penmen continue to be ranked as the top team in the region by the  U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA).  The Penmen, who finished 32nd at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, return six athletes from its team two years ago including Corcoran, who was an All-American in 2019.

  • The Penmen will compete at the NEICAAA (New England Championships) next Saturday, October 9, 2021 in Boston.
