Alula Sets New Program Record, Penmen Win Four Events at Southern Maine

Penmen Wrap Up Successful Meet Saturday

When and Where: December 11, 2021- Costello Sports Complex, Gorham, Maine (University of Southern Maine - Meet 1)
Results:  No team scoring

(Gorham, Maine) -  Senior Bennie Alula (Hartford, Conn.) established a new program record, winning the weight throw on Saturday in an indoor meet at the University of Southern Maine.  The Penmen won three other events on the day.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Alula won the weight throw with her second attempt, which measured 15.46m (50' 8.75").  She broke her own program mark of 15.42 set in January of 2020.  Bennie also set a PR in the shot put at 11.61m, finishing in third place.
  • Sophomore Laila Bunnitt (Lewiston, Maine) returned to her home state and set a PR in the shot put at 12.16m, winning the event.  Bunnitt also placed sixth in the weight throw.
  • On the track, the Penmen earned wins in the 600m and the 4x200 relay.
  • Senior Meghan Stroh (New Fairfield, Conn.) won the 600m in 1:46.90.
  • Stroh joined sophomore Sydney Eccleston (Swanzey, N.H.), freshman Tori Allen (Litchfield, N.H.), and sophomore Ava Gravell (Windham, N.H.) to win the 4x200 relay in 1:49.49.
  • Gravell also finished third in both the 55m (new PR of 7.52) and the long jump.
  • Sophomore Emma Hallet (Billerica, Mass.) was the top finisher for SNHU in the 55 hurdles, finishing second.  Hallet's time was a PR (9.02).  Sophomore Theresa Irving (Penacook, N.H.) finished fourth with a PR of 9.35.  Senior Jordan Woodford (Berkley, Mass.) wound up fifth with a new personal best of 9.51.  Allen had a PR of 9.33 in the prelims, and finished seventh in the final.
NOTES
  • Junior Madison McMahon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) finished third in the high jump (1.61m), a new indoor mark for the Penmen program.
  • Eccleston also set a personal best in the high jump at 1.51m
  • SNHU's distance runners had this meet off.
  • There was no team scoring.  
WHAT'S NEXT
  •  The Penmen return to action after the New Year when they are scheduled to head to the Dartmouth Relays in Hanover, N.H. on Saturday, January 8.
