(Hooksett, N.H.) - Freshman Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) and senior Emily Critch (Halifax, Mass.) hit grand slams on Sunday as SNHU swept Saint Michael's in a doubleheader by scores of 10-1 and 9-1.
KEY MOMENTS - GAME 1
- Senior Olivia Strasser (Rutland, Mass.) went the distance to pick up her first win of the season, and 15th of her career, with a complete-game three-hitter.Â
- The Penmen opened a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of two errors by the Purple Knights.
- A single by Critch and a walk to senior Shay Sauvageau (Griswold, Conn.) started the bottom of the third inning. Senior Coralie Mathieu (Methuen, Mass.) made it 5-0 with an RBI single, and Sauvageau scored on a wild pitch.
- Saint Michael's scored its run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Angelica Johns.
- In the final at bat for SNHU, senior Jackie Gavin (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled, and senior Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) followed with a single. Freshman Alyssa Dimauro (Chester, N.H.) reached on an error to load the bases ahead of Gifford's grand slam.
KEY MOMENTS - GAME 2
- Griffin improved her record to 5-1 and finished the weekend with three wins over the Purple Knights. She allowed one run in 13 innings in the series.
- Griffin started the game with a base hit, scoring on a double by Gifford.Â
- Critch, who entered the game with one RBI, had five in this contest, including a groundout to score Gifford to make it 2-0.
- Mathieu had an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.
- Saint Michael's cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning when Grace Trautman homered.
- SNHU finished the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single by Griffin, an RBI single by Dimauro, and the grand slam by Critch.
NOTES
- The offense came alive this weekend for Southern New Hampshire with the team hitting .417 for the series (43-for-103) and outscoring the Purple Knights 33-7.
- The Penmen have won the last ten meetings with Saint Michael's College.
- Gifford's home run was her second of the season. Critch has the other two home runs for the Penmen in 2021.
- SNHU Head Softball Coach Deb Robitaille recognized those are playing a final season with the Penmen, including grad student Corinne Coults (Beverly, Mass.), Mathieu, Sauvageau, Critch, Gavin, and Strasser.
