Junior Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, as the second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team silenced No. 7 Saint Michael's College, 4-0, Saturday afternoon in an NE10 Championship first round contest at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Torres blanked Tyler Whitney, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles to earn the win for the Penmen. He also combined with senior Guido Janssen (Zeewolde, Netherlands) to double up Whitney and Connor Scott, 6-3, at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
- Freshman Sam Goddard (Amherst, N.H.) made quick work of Luke Ramsay, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
- Sophomore Noah Dubitzky (Marlborough, Conn.) also posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Jack Gunning at No. 6 singles.
- Graduate student Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) was ahead, 6-1, 2-0, at No. 1 singles against Josh Weiss when the match ended. He and brother Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) rolled to a 6-1 triumph at No. 1 singles versus Weiss and Jason Boucher.
- Willem van Biezen was in front, 5-4, at No. 2 singles against Boucher when the match was clinched.
- Janssen was leading, 6-1, 4-2, at No. 3 singles against Scott.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire has now captured seven straight wins.
- SNHU improves to 17-9 (.654) all-time in the Northeast-10 Championship, including 2-0 against the Purple Knights.
- This marks the third win of the year for the Penmen against Saint Michael's after sweeping a pair of regular-season matches.
- SNHU has now captured 54 of its last 55 matches against NE10 foes, including the postseason, dating back to Oct. 15, 2015.
- The Penmen are ranked second in the ITA East Region.
