The second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team officially had its run of four straight NE10 titles ended with a 4-0 loss to third-seeded Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday afternoon in an NE10 Championship semifinal match at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Senior Guido Janssen (Zeewolde, Netherlands) and junior Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) pulled the Penmen even in doubles with a 7-5 win against Ivan Bernal and Kevin Denecheau at No. 2, but graduate students Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) and Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) were edged, 6-4, by Felipe Carvalho and Preston Gordon at No. 1, as the Ravens went up, 1-0.
- Janssen nearly staved off elimination for the Penmen at No. 3 singles, but eventual fell to Bernal, 6-1, 1-6, 5-7, in a match that clinched the victory.
- Things would have been interesting from there, as Bas van Biezen was tied, 2-6, 6-2, against Carvalho at No. 1, Torres was leading Cladera, 6-1, 6-6, at No. 4 and freshman Sam Goddard (Amherst, N.H.) was ahead of Barak, 6-3, 6-6, at No. 5.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire has its seven-match winning streak snapped.
- The Penmen also suffer their first ever loss at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts, as they fall to 20-1 since playing their first match there March 31, 2018.
- SNHU dips to 17-10 (.630) all-time in the Northeast-10 Championship, including 0-1 against Franklin Pierce.
- With the Penmen losing, there will be a new NE10 Champion for the first time since 2015. It is also just the second time since 2013 SNHU will not be in the final.
- The two teams had split a pair of regular-season meetings. The Ravens snapped SNHU's 47-match NE10 win streak with a 5-1 home victory March 30, before the Penmen pulled out a 4-3 home win April 8.
- The Penmen are ranked second in the ITA East Region, while the Ravens are seventh.
