The Penmen won a second consecutive Shacklette Invitational at Saint Anselm College on Saturday, edging second place American International by a single point. The Penmen were led by graduate student Ashley Corcoran (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who also had won the meet in 2019.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- Corcoran had established a course-record winning the event in 2019. On a reconfigured course which is now 6k, Corcoran rallied past Mercyline Kimaiyo of American International to win in 23:29.3.
- Graduate student Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) turned in a strong effort in 23:48.1 to finish third overall.
- Junior Sarah Zarakotas (Deerfield, N.H.) came in 12th overall in 24:58.9, finishing just ahead of teammates junior Lydia Mathson (Nashua, N.H.), and sophomore Hannah Bradbury (Seakonk, Mass.).
NOTES
- SNHU finished with 46 points, with AIC second at 47. Saint Anselm (60), Stonehill (61), and Saint Michael's College 156) were the next three teams.
- This was the 39th running of the event which started in 1982.
- The Penmen were ranked as the top team in the region in the pre-season rankings by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA). The Penmen, who finished 32nd at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, return six athletes from its team two years ago including Corcoran, who was an All-American in 2019.
