How Sweet it is! Men's Tennis Captures 4-3 Win Over Queens (N.Y.) to Advance to Round of 16

Hooksett, N.H. – Trailing 3-2 the second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team rallied with a pair of singles wins to earn a 4-3 victory against third-seeded Queens (N.Y.) College in the NCAA East Regional II final Tuesday afternoon, as the Penmen advance to the round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla., for the second time in program history.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS/HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Penmen earned the doubles point by winning first at number three doubles as Vacalares and Statsny won 6-3 over Tim Ostheimer and Mariano Bibiloni.
  • SNHU clinched the doubles point as No. 1 Berling and Guy defeated Omar El Shehawey/Moritz Borges 6-3.
  • No. 2 Torres and Nadeau led Rashad and Demuth 5-4 when the doubles point was clinched.
  • No. 5 freshman Boris Stastny (Prague, Czech Republic) lost his match to Moritz Borges 6-3, 6-1.
  • No. 6 freshman Cade Nadeau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) lost in straight sets to Francisco Gonzalez by scores of 6-2 ,6-4.
  • Trailing 2-1, No. 2 Graduate student Thomas Guy (Fulda, Germany) got the Penmen back even with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Mariano Bibiloni.
  • No. 1 freshman Jonathan Berling (Moss, Norway) dropped his first match of the season falling to Kareem Rashadd– 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
  • Trailing 3-2 and facing defeat, No. 3 Senior Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) captured a win over Lucas Demuth, 4-6, 7-6-, 6-1
  • No. 4 Senior Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) completed the comeback and secured the win with earned a win in three-sets 6-2, 6-7, 6-4
NOTES
  • The Penmen are the first NE10 institution to advance to the round of 16 since 2019 when SNHU also made it breaking a 17-year draught going back to Assumption College in 2002. Le Moyne College also qualified for the round of 16 this season.
  • The Penmen, making their 10th NCAA Championship appearance, improve to 3-8 all-time in the NCAA postseason and knock off Queens for the second time in four tries. This includes back-to-back wins over Queens in the NCAA tournament.
  • SNHU, which earned hosting duties and a bye as the No. 2 seed, won an NCAA Championship match for the third straight trip after advancing to the round of 16 with a 4-3 victory over Queens College back in 2019.
