Penmen Win First NE10 Track & Field Championship

Corcoran Outstanding Track Performer and Most Valuable Athlete, Bunnitt Field Athlete of Meet

(North Easton, Mass.) - The Southern New Hampshire University Women's Track & Field Team won its first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship Saturday.  Graduate student Ashley Corcoran (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was named the Track Athlete of the Meet and Most Valuable Athlete.  Sophomore Laila Bunnitt (Lewiston, Maine) was named the Field Athlete of the Meet.
 

NE10 CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES:
  • SNHU compiled 176.5 points to finish ahead of American International College (135), Stonehill College (129), and Southern Connecticut State University (120). 
  • The Penmen finished second at this year's Indoor Championships, and had recorded a best-ever program finish while fourth in the Outdoor Event last year.
  • The Elite 24 award for the top competing athlete with the highest grade point average went to SNHU sophomore Kelsey Seamans (Methuen, Mass.).  (See separate story).
  • Head Coach Lex Butler launched a program in 2015-16 for SNHU, and led the team to the Championship in seven seasons.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Corcoran followed up Friday's record-setting win in the 1500m, with a win in the 3000 Steeplechase, and a second in the 5000m to repeat the top awards she won at the Indoor Championships.
  • Corcoran ran the Steeplechase in 10:38.41 and the 1500m in 17:39.85.
  • Bunnitt's NE10 Championship included a win in the discus (41.05m), second-place in the shot put (11.86m), and fourth in the hammer (43.01m).  Her marks in the discus and hammer were PR's.
  • Graduate student Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) added a third-place finish in the 800m (2:19.31) to her third in the 1500m. 
  • Sophomore Kaitlyn O'Rourke (Braintree, Mass.), who ran a PR to finish second in the 1500m, set a new PR while finishing third in the 3000m Steeplechase (11:21.92).
  • The Penmen turned in a second place in the 4x100 with sophomore Emma Hallet (Billerica, Mass.), sophomore Ava Gravell (Billerica, Mass.), freshman Tori Allen (Litchfield, N.H.) and senior Meghan Stroh (New Fairfield, Conn.) competing.
  • The Penmen had a 1-3 finish in the heptathlon with Allen winning with a new program record for the event with 4,246 points.  She won two of the seven events (high jump and javelin).
  • Hallet finished third, also eclipsing the former program mark with 3,913 points.  Her top event was the high jump.
  • Senior Bennie Alula (Hartford, Conn.) added a fourth-place finish in the shot put (11.54m) to yesterday's fifth place in the hammer throw.
UP NEXT
  • The New England Championships next week in New Britain, Conn. will give athletes another chance to qualify for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
