SNHU Wins Southern Maine Meet as Laila Bunnitt Wins Twice

Penmen Long-Distance Runners Strong in Season Debut

SNHU Women's Track & Field opened the new year with a win Saturday at the University of Southern Maine.  Senior Laila Bunnitt (Lewiston, Maine) delivered the top shot put performance in the NE10 this season and also won the weight throw.

TOP PERFORMANCES
  • Bunnitt – wins in shot put and weight throw
  • Senior Kaitlyn O'Rourke (Braintree, Mass.) won the 1000m race in 3:19.13.  It was her first try at the distance.
  • Senior Kelsey Seamans (Methuen, Mass.) was the winner in the 5000m race.
  • SNHU also recorded a win in the 4x800 relays with O'Rourke, freshman Aveline McCabe (White Bear Lake, Minn.), sophomore Anna Wiersma (Veldhoven, Netherlands), and senior Hannah Bradbury (Seekonk, Mass.) running the legs.
  • Senior Emma Hallet (Billerica, Mass.) won the 55 hurdles in 9.17 seconds.
  • Bradbury finished second in the 600m (1:45.37) and McCabe was second in the 1000m (3:22.14).
  • Sophomore Hope Sinclair (Hampton, N.H.) finished second in the 55m (new PR of 7.71), 200m, and as part of the 4x400 relay with sophomore Maggie McInerney (Acton, Mass.), junior Tori Allen (Litchfield, N.H.), and Hallet.
  • McInerney also earned team points with a pair of third-place finishes in the long jump and 55H, and a fourth-place finish in the 55m.
  • Sophomore Corrina Obernesser (Westminster, Colo.) was second in the 3000m in 11:11.28
NOTES
  • Distance runners were competing for the first time this season.
  • The Penmen racked up 134 total points with host Southern Maine second with 127 points.  Keene State was third at 89 points.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will compete at the Suffolk Icebreaker Invitational next Saturday, January 13.  The meet will be held at the Track at New Balance, which is also scheduled to host the Northeast-10 Indoor Championships Feb. 16-17.
