Vargas Segura Swings Way to NE10 Player of the Week Accolade

Junior outfielder went 9-for-18 and drove in nine runs

MANSFIELD, Mass. –- Junior Harry Vargas Segura (Bronx, N.Y.) of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was selected as the NE10 Player of the Week for the period ending March 10, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Vargas Segura went 9-for-18 (.500) at the plate with 11 runs scored, nine RBI, two home runs and eight walks, as he slashed .654/.944/1.598, during a 4-2 week for SNHU. Vargas Segura also went a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts, while making 13 flawless plays in center field. He went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks, three runs scored and three steals in a 14-6 game-one triumph over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday. He also had his first career two-homer game Sunday, when he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a career-high six RBI, as the Penmen rallied to top STAC, 13-10, in the opener.

Through 16 games, Vargas Segura leads the NE10 in hits (22), runs (25), walks (18) and stolen bases (13), while ranking second in home runs (4), RBI (18), total bases (38) and on-base percentage (.569), third in slugging percentage (.731), fourth in batting average (.423) and fifth in doubles (4). Of the 41 players in the league with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, only 16 have handled more total chances than Vargas Segura's 29.

Vargas Segura and the Penmen are back in action Saturday, March 16 when they kick off a three-game set at Post University with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
