CARY, N.C. – The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team spent nearly two hours Saturday morning playing alongside children with the Miracle League of the Triangle in Cary, N.C. The Penmen were participating in their community engagement day at the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.
The Miracle League of the Triangle is a fully inclusive program. Anyone (age 5+) with a diagnosed disability can participate. Members of the Penmen baseball team and coaching staff helped organize the special exhibition game held at Andy's Foundation Ball Field at Adams Elementary School in Cary, pairing up with one of the two teams, while players and coaches from Catawba College guided the other.
Established in 2006, the Miracle League of the Triangle's goal is to provide children with special needs the opportunity to play America's favorite pastime. "The Miracle League is one of the few places where every child's challenges and differences are not only understood and accepted, but celebrated. When a child hits the ball and runs to right field instead of first base, it's celebrated. No one is made to feel bad; everyone is supported. For many parents it's the one time and the one place where they can truly relax without any concern, and their child can just have fun."
Sixth-seeded Southern New Hampshire opens the NCAA Division II Championship on Sunday, June 2 (1:30 p.m.) when it meets third-seeded Catawba College at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
